| I play four hours on the daily double just to bust out in 20th place for a measly $60 after having my AJ lose to A10 then my 88 to 66 consecutively. Now i remember why i play cash games...(sorry just a rant... tourneys are so frustrating!) |

| I've found one table SNGs to be a good comprimise. It is still frustrating to go out on the bubble to a longshot draw, but you ususaly have invested an hour or less, rather the the 5-6 hours it takes to cash in the really large MTTs. |

| i actually found that the variance for the 45 max MTT wasnt too bad. i had quite an amazing record on the 75 dollar one, must hav played like 15-20 and i cashed about 40% of the time in those tournaments. |

Yeah, my latest idea is to play a couple of SNGs alongside my tournaments. I figured that a good tournament player ought to be capable of crushing SNGs, so I can earn a steady flow of money whilst grinding away at the MTTs in search of the occasional big score.
Seems to be working ok at the moment. I expect it to reduce my short-term variance, and it also helps me to resist playing too many hands in the tourneys. I get bored easily you see. |

Well done - does this tourney not have a huge field? 20th out of say even 1000 is a good achievement, especfially if its a low buy in for like $10 with a lot of weaker players - you have made 6 times your buy in, you should be very pleased.
I'm the same - that stuff gets to me as well, so I just play tourneys every now and then, and try to look at other things as opposed to how much I cashed for when it is over. I probably play about 90-95% cash games as well. |

| Hmmm...so you guys are good at cash games. Why even bother in tournaments?!?! I'm in the opposite position, I do ok in MTTs and Sit N Gos, but can't make anything work out in cash games. Trust me, i think success in side games is a much better trade off. |

I know how you feel I busted out a few places out of the money in Early Double B a week ago because my hand that had the other one dominated lost and then it happened 2 more times in a row after that. It's such a great feeling.....
But I agree with Aron, because I do much better in SnG's and such than cash games any day. |

Hah yea i've tried this too, the problem i have is that if i take a crippling bad beat in the big MTT i'll go on major tilt, affecting my sitngos too. This is my biggest problem obviously and i'm working on it. Even in the late stages of a tourney with only a few big blinds, the blinds are so big that a double up can put you right back in it. Thanks for the advice guys though. On a side note what do you guys think about the skill level of $20 sitngos?...i personally found the play worse than the $5 games. At the time i was playing sitngos exclusively and ran horribly losing 25% of my bankroll then quit to go back to cash games. |

I have played a ton of tournies just to go out in the bottom 14% or something after 4 hours and either bubble or place for barely any profit. I would get mad at myself and think things same to some of you, "why play 4 hours to win $5 when I could have played one hand on ring and won $25".
I usually, well... How to put this... I have never lost my entire BR in a tourny going on tilt. Which is nice. Plus, if you do manage to stick it in, and place top 5 or something, thats nice too! I think you [OP] might need to try larger field/buy-in MTTs?
SnGs are a good idea too, to keep things balanced. In a 45 man, you can easily double twice and place. Double 2 more times and you pretty much have won it.
I've done pretty well on ring trying to play it like a tournament. Of course the blinds do not increase, but I will win X amount and move up limits, usually once I double the buy-in. Its fun. Take $25, or $100, and try it. Double and move up to the next level table and repeat about 3 or 4 times then stop.
God I hate bubbling. |

Yes it is! I never really followed any sort of bankroll management with less than a few hundred in the account.
I've taken a few dollars upto a thousand within a week several times, and each time I was roughly following what I described. I would stay at some levels longer than others but for the most part I'd double or triple then move up levels. With the random sngs and tournies here and there. |

I agree, but if you have some spare money to invest it can be profitable.
I've done something similar on PP. Started with $100 in January playing $6 and $11 FR SNGs which I'm obv not rolled for. I havnt played too much with it last couple of months, but 100 games later I'm still going and I have a decent amount more than what I started with, and I'm now ironically over rolled for $11 SNGs but I keep cashing at them so i dont see any reason to do anything different. Maybe when it gets to a set amount I'll take out all the profit and try again with $100.
I did this because PP SNGs is like free money if you play ABC tight poker at these levels, if I lose the $100 I dont care and I'm not that great at SNGs normally. |

| you see, i have the opposite problem...i do fairly well in tournament poker, then take my bankroll to play ring games...a few months later, and my entire bankroll has shrunk down to almost nothing...looks like it's back to tournament poker.... |
