Hi,

I am an avid Texas Hold em player and recently has my first home tourney. There was a $5 buy in game and a $10 buy in game. You in return get $1,090 in chips
$5 Buy in Levels
SB BB Ante
Level 1 0-30 min $10 $15 0
Level 2 30-60 min $15 $25 0
Level 3 60-1:30 hr $25 $50 0
Level 4 1:30-2:00 hr $50 $100 0
Level 5 2:00-2:30 hr $100 $200 $0
Level 6 2:30-3:00 hr $150 $300 $25
Level 7 3:00-3:30 hr $200 $400 $50
Level 8 3:30-4 hr $250 $500 $75
Level 9 4-4:30 hr $300 $600 $150
Level 10 4:30-5hr $500 $1,000 $250

I received many complaints saying that this was a bad structure and it went up too quickly.

Here is the one i remade for the $10 game
SB BB Ante
Level 1 0-30 min $10 $15 0
Level 2 30-60 min $15 $25 0
Level 3 60-1:30 hr $25 $50 0
Level 4 1:30-2:00 hr $50 $100 0
Level 5 2:00-2:30 hr $75 $150 $0
Level 6 2:30-3:00 hr $100 $200 $25
Level 7 3:00-3:30 hr $125 $250 $50
Level 8 3:30-4 hr $250 $500 $75
Level 9 4-4:30 hr $300 $600 $150
Level 10 4:30-5hr $500 $1,000 $250

This one was done at the request of 2 specific players who claim this is the perfect system. This one moves way to slowly for me and doesn't get a large enough pot, or at least that is what i think

Please tell me what you think about these levels,
SUGGESTIONS, COMMENTS PLEASE

Very Happy

Only 5$ and 10$ buy-ins? How much chips do you get to start off with.

How many chips is each player allotted at the start of the tournament? Usually, I advocate making the small blind equal to one half of the big blind, though with some stakes, it's not all that possible. If you make a post telling me how many players would start the tournament, and how long you wanted it to take, I will give you a structure that suits those needs.

Players to start the tourney: 8 +/- 2

Length is no more than 3-4 hours.

Thanks Grip

Okay, this is what I would do, although this one will probably take more than four hours:

Start everyone with 400 in chips:

White chips are worth 1

Red chips are worth 5

Blue chips are worth 20

Black (or whatever fourth color you have, if you have one) is worth 100

Hopefully you have enough chips to give everyone 20-25 whites, but if not, you should have enough to give everyone 15 whites. Anyway, ideally, you want to give:
25 whites
15 reds
5 blue
2 black

Blinds increase incrementally in 20 minute levels as follows:

0:00 2-4
0:20 3-6
0:40 4-8
1:00 6-12
1:20 8-16
COLOR OUT WHITE CHIPS
1:40 10-20
2:00 15-30
2:20 20-40
2:40 30-60
COLOR OUT RED CHIPS
2:40 40-80
3:00 60-120
3:20 80-160
3:40 100-200

I couldn't see the games going past this level, even with 4000 chips in play. If the field is down to two players, the average stack is only 10 BB deep...

If you prefer thirty minute levels you simply need to start with less deep stacks.
Here are the advantages to this setup:
Starts off with lots of chips, first few levels very skill oriented.
Coloring out chips is very simple and it does not hamper the blind structure.

Disadvantages:
20 minute levels mean that after a while the blinds will start to catch up to players, so players who do not continue to accumulate chips will waste away.
Late in the tournament blinds will be very large and players will be all-in before the flop often.
Requires a lot of chips to satisfy the requirements.

The other structure you could employ is a little bit less skill oriented in the early stages, but by the end you don't have a crapshoot either.

Players are allotted 100 chips each.

Blinds increase incrementally as follows:
0:00 1-2
0:30 2-4
1:00 3-6
1:30 4-8
2:00 6-12
2:30 8-16
COLOR OUT WHITE CHIPS
3:00 10-20
3:30 15-30
4:00 25-50

Again, the longest I could see a ten person tournament with this structure is 4+ hours.

Advantages:
30 minute blind intervals allow for more skill and less luck to determine a winner (although the blinds do start very high).
The ends of the tournament will not be crapshoots, and play will remain constant throughout the tournament.
Not a whole lot of chips are needed to set up a tournament in this manner.
Accumulating a lot of chips is rewarded heavily.

Disadvantages: Players start with 50 BB and after an hour if their stack has stayed the same they will have 16 BB. Players have no early stage to get a feel for the table, with blinds starting at 1-2 they are forced to get in and gamble early.

Blinds Blinds
Level 1 25-25 Level 8 300-600
Level 2 25-50 Level 9 500-1000 remove $25 chips
Level 3 50-100 Level 10 1000-2000

Each player should starts with $2000 in chips. Start each player with 8 $25 chips, 8 $100,
and 2 $500 chips. Determine how many players you have and how long you want the
tournament to last and find the corresponding time limit for each level in the grid.
For example: If you have 20 Players and you want the tournament to last 2 hours, the time
limit for each level is 12 minutes. All tournaments start at level 1 and proceed until 1
player has all the chips.

Here's what we do when we play. We start off with $20 in chips. We play Whites 25c, Blues 50c, Green 75c, Red $1 chips.
Start at 25/50 blinds for the first hour.
then raise blinds little by little for the next 15 or 20 minutes depending on how long you want it to last, for example. We usually play with 9-10 people so this makes it last for about 3 hours usually, possibly longer.

Start-1hr:10c/25c
1hr-1:20:25/50
1:20-1:40:50/1
2:00-2:20:1/2
2:20-2:40:1.50/3
2:40-3:2/4 (exchange Red/Blue for $2 chips usually Black).
3-End:3/6

The one my friends and I often use is loosely based on the PokerStars system:

20 minute levels, start with $1,500:
Red = $5 x 20 chips = $100
Green = $25 x 16 chips = $400
Black = $100 x 10 chips = $1,000

Level 1 - 10/20 Level 2 - 15/30 Level 3 - 20/40
Level 4 - 25/50 Level 5 - 40/80 Level 6 - 50/100 (Color up reds)
Level 7 - 75/150 Level 8 - 100/200 Level 9 - 100/200, 25 ante
Level 10 - 150/300, 50 ante Level 11 - 200/400, 75 ante
Level 12 - 300/600, 100 ante

We usually have 6 players (+/- 1) so play is quite measured during the first hour, then begins to pick up the pace thereafter, with the tournament almost always ending during the fourth hour (levels 10 - 12).

For people who like a little deeper stacks and a bit slower pace, you can start with $2,000 rather than $1,500 and just give everyone 5 more black chips, which also works pretty well and seems satisfactory to most of our regulars. Then you start with 100 BB rather than 75; the BB at level 4 is 1/40 of your starting stack rather than 1/30; and the BB at level 7 is 7.5% of your starting stack rather than 10%.
