As hard as it is when those bad runs of cards come your way you have to keep yourself from tilting. I had been on a big downswing which has finally turned around but I made that downswing worse by tilting off extra money that I shouldn't have. See that big down spike in the middle of the graph? At least 4 buy-ins of that or $100 was due to tilt because of my bad luck. Imagine if I had controlled my tilt better while on the downswing. Now that my luck has changed and I'm on an upswing again I'd be up this month instead of even. I'm really starting to think that being able to control tilt in downswings is the most important trait a poker player can have. Keep that in mind while you're playing and feel yourself starting to chase without odds and call lighter because a few bad beats. You're just digging your hole deeper.

Have you been watching me play today? Why couldn't I have gone and cleaned the garage instead of giving away all my profit from the last week? Urgh. And it's not even a long downswing, just a few bad beats last night and this morning, and I turned into uberdonk. If I wasn't so embarrassed I'd post some hands in the chip donation thread.

Anyway, good point, graphically represented. Thanks.

Tilt control is an underrated skill. When I have a day like your graph and break even, I'm happier than when I make money.

What software are you using that makes graphs?

Since this is in the strategy section, perhaps we need to start discussing things to do to keep from going on tilt, or what to do when you are tilting. Just saying 'don't tilt' is fine advice, but I think we can do better.

So what kinds of suggestions do we have for preventing tilt, or handling yourself when you get tilted?

The easiest solution is often the simplest - take a break.

My suggestion is in the OP. Think about the way poker works and the swings that are natural. Realizing that downswings happen to everyone and minimizing your losses by continuing to play correctly will make sure that you have the highest total profit when your luck turns back around.

Try listening to music while playing or watch TV. I find I tend to not focus on the way other people are playing when you know they are just raising cos they play loosely. Well maybe not taking notice of how people are betting is not the best advice, it works for me though.

Dont watch TV when you are playing. If you want to win watch the table, if you dont how are you supposed to know what exactly is going on?

If you dont focus on how other people are playing how are you going to try to pick up on how they play certain hands?

Well I did say it was not the best advice Razz

I only really watch TV early on as there are far too many donkeys at the start of almost all tournaments. When the blinds are higher I focus on what is happening.
