I made a risky call on the turn, drawing to a flush today, but I thought I had 15 outs, so I made the call. It paid off and I got the typical donkey complaints from the loser. That doesn't happen to me very often, but it's very annoying when it does. I had to mute him.

In the hand, I was dealt KQs. I was the big blind and nobody raised, so I checked to the flop. With that hand, I could have raised, but the only caller was the small blind, so I would have only taken down 40 chips. I wanted more. I missed the flop, but made a continuation bet and was called. I was thinking I might need to just get out of this one, but then the ace of hearts fell on the turn. That gave me the nut flush draw, so I was thinking I had fifteen outs (9 hearts, 3 kings, 3 queens). I don't usually like to play a draw hand past the turn, but I felt like I probably had the best hand against this particular caller, anyway. As I look at the hand history, however, I see it differently. He had been playing pretty aggressive, so his big bet should have told me he had an ace, but I didn't see it during the hand.

So, do I call 320 chips and hope a heart helps me beat his aces? There were 960 chips in the middle at the time, giving me 3:1 pot odds. I realize my error now. I was thinking I had 15 outs, giving me a 1 in 3 chance, making it a coin toss to hit. Right now, however, I realize that against his aces, I only had nine outs, giving me a 1 in 5 chance, making this a bad call. I made the call anyway and hit a heart on the river.

These hand histories really are helping me improve my game. I need to learn to see the hands as clearly when I'm playing them as I do when I'm reviewing them, though.

Here's the hand. Does anyone see it differently?

Dont show next time. Leave him wondering so he has to pay you off next time with an A.

edit: When determining outs, make sure you realize that your 'outs' don't necessarily give you a win. In this case, if you make your hand, it is possible you would lose to a full house. Since your HH doesn't include suits of the cards on the board, I am only left to guess. If whichever card isn't a heart on the flop comes on the river, would you still feel comfident you had the best hand. If the board read 772A7 or 772A2, your flush is not as powerful, especially with the villain calling a flop bet and c/r the turn.

Very good point bottlecapthief. It had never occurred to me that I should worry about a full house. With two sevens on the board, he could easily have had one. However, the guy had been playing pretty aggressively, so if he had two pairs or a set before the river, I think he would have bet more. Still, those are the kinds of things I need to think about during the tournament. I think when I get better at analyzing the hands quickly, I'll start earning more.

Thanks.

I have a feeling he didn't have an Ace.
