So, my bankroll is finally large enough that I can safely move up to the $10 buy in games (I play six handed), and I've been looking forward to it. I figured, better players, more "stable" poker (less bad beats because a guy shoves on you with a gutshot and makes it).
I'm doing well (although my sample size is small, I just started yesterday) but not for the reasons I expected. The $10 games don't seem to have better players... they just have bigger fish! Instead of guys who have lost $100 playing poker, it's guys who have lost over $1000...
1. It seems like more people with a lot of money play at this level, meaning the money doesn't matter to them, so they play badly.
2. If it's not a "rich fish" it's often someone playing out of their buy-in level, so they're playing scared.
Has anyone else noticed this? I'm seeing betting patterns so easy to read I could train a dog to notice them, failed desperation bluffs that let me take entire stacks, and other such shenanigans. I consider myself a "better than average" player (although not great), but I've found the $10 games to be pretty easy, as long as you play tight, by the book poker.
Has anyone else noticed this? My bankroll doesn't allow me to move up further, but I find myself wondering what the $20 and even $33 or $50 games look like. Biggest fish ever, or will I find myself in shark infested waters? |

You are still going to find lots of idiots. Generally speaking, the difference is that you encounter quality players more often, not that the bad players get better.
That said, most people begin to have an idea of what they are doing, especially at the $50 level. |

I just moved up from 5$ to 10$ myself yesterday (after finally accumulating 550$ in my br), only playing 6-handed, and my first impressions are matching yours so far, too.
Gotta ask though, Stavingwriter is your Player ID? |
