A thousand pardons if I offended your delicate sensibilities.
Actually there is something that's just like a new car. A 2 year old car in pristine condition is very much like a new car. |

I wouldn't say I'm "delicate"... that's just a word that I don't use lightly. It doesn't matter, I shouldn't have brought it up.
I can see your argument that for the price, a slightly used car is comparable, but it's not the same, no way, no sir. That sounds more like a rationalization you would use if you can't afford a new car. |

Well obviously if a person is wealthy they'll most likely avoid the hassles and just buy a new car but most people aren't wealthy so getting essentially the same car for half the price is a very attractive deal. It's just my opinion. I don't really car what kind of car he buys. If no one bought new cars I wouldn't have such a wonderful selection of used cars to choose from. |

Well, I do appreciate all of your feedback, veiled in condescension as it may be. So, in response, I have two points;
1) My car needed, not only a whole new transmission, but also had problems with the suspension. Not to mention, two blown speakers, inoperable power door locks, significant body damage, and a myriad of other minor issues. It would have cost at least 3k just to get it back on the road, and probably 6k to get it back in "good" condition. Add that to the 130,000 miles on it, and you can see that it was in my best interest to walk away and start over with something new. Sure, it could be argued that 6k is obviously less than the 25k a new car will cost. But the reality is that the 6k is just a band aid, more or less, and that it might only save me a year or two before I am forced to spend the 25k anyway. Sorry, the math is my favor.
2) I am of the opinion, that if I am the only person to ever drive my car, then I will be the only one to blame when something goes wrong. I would rather have a new car, with a good warranty, that I can drive for the 6-8 years, than a used car with any number of unforeseeable problems. If you'll notice, I said "I don't do pre-owned", I did not say anything against the validity of the practice.
Cheers-
P.S.
I looked at the RX-8, and really do like it. But, it's a bit too flashy for my tastes. And besides, if I were going to spend the extra 5k, it would obviously be on a Nissan 350Z. Now THAT, is a truly awesome car. |

You sold a 6 year old Civic for $1k??? WTF did it need, a new engine, chassis and wheels??
I'm not a fan of any of the cars you listed, but then I have particular taste, so mine would be the following:
Honda Integra Type R DC5 (06)
Honda Civic Type R EK9 (99)
Honda Civic Type R EP3 JDM Spec (05)
BMW M3 Coupe (07)
Obviously all pre owned though. |
BMW might have been some 'exotic' car to those of us at the end of the world back in the 80's but now even us Aussies realise that it's only a average car.
Anyway, what part of new don't you understand. Mind you, you could sell him a car just out of warrantee, wait a month or two, tamper with the car so it runs poorly then say that the cars had it and buy it cheaply from him.
Where does this guy live? Actually better not say that, he might answer. |
If an albine tuned 400bhp M3 that does 0-60 in around 4 seconds is an "average" car then I presume all you Aussies drive around in Lambos and F40's? LOL "BMW an average car" - stop acting like you know anything about cars and pipe down.

Mazda RX8. It's truly beautiful and handles better than the M3 or Mercedes SLK. Probably get a new one for under $30k.
 |
I would very much doubt an RX8 handles better than an M3, not with the traction control it has. I like these as well though, those rotary engines pack a punch, although a girl i work with has one and is desperate to sell because she said there fuel consumption is horrendous. |

This is your biggest mistake. Buying a new car is kind of retarded. You can buy a 2 year old car that's practically new with 20K-30K miles on it for half the price of the same car new. You lose all the value of that new car over the first couple of years.
|
+1
2-3 year old vehilces FTW! |
+2. I bought my car when it was 3 years old - £20k cheaper with less than 15,000 miles on the clock. More or less good as new.
I kind of see where Chillbot is coming from - but in all honesty a 2 year old car with low mileage thats been broken in isnt that far off a brand new car. The only difference is you pay exstra for the new one....the only real difference is the money. The condition of the used one will be near enough the same as the brand new one if looked after. |

I've somewhat hijacked your post - sorry. I'm very much into my cars and performance machines so i tend to get carried away.....
You did 130,000 miles in an 02 plate car?? Wow - you must do a heck of a lot of driving?
You do realise that the 350Z is flashier than an RX-8 though lol. 350Z over RX8 any day of the week although (at least in Scotland) they are getting a bit common just now. |

| Well, seeing as I am a former Mazda RX8 owner I guess I should chime in here. (Yep the pretty car in my sig is sold and gone.) Anyhow, if you are driving 50/50 highway/city miles, you will pull about 17-18 mpg on average. Couple that with the fact that the Renesis requires premium gas.... you got yourself a hefty little bill. And for whoever said that the RX8 doesnt handle as well as an M3, I'm going to have to say you are wrong. Back when I owned the car, I kept up with Lotus Elises on curvy entrance ramps on two different occasions. The RX8 is a monster in the twisties. Its weakness comes in the straightaway. At less than 150 ft/lb of torque to the wheels, its is by no means a dragster. If you don't care about possibly having to sell a kidney to afford gas, than you can find a used RX8 in great shape for $15K or so. I would NOT recommend buying one new, the RX8 is one of the worst cars for depreciation you will ever find. |
