This hand still haunts me - I can see the funny side of it now (after a week or 2)
I had Ace, 7
Flops comes out... 7, 5, 7
I bet & get called
Turn is an Ace
I bet & get called (bearing in mind I have a full house)
River is a King
I go 'all in' thinking Im safe with my full house
what did the other guy have??? Yep....you guessed it....2 Kings!!!
I'd like to hear about any of ur bad beat stories
(p.s I dont play cash games any more now - I stick to tourneys) Cash games can crush ur soul |

To apollo-95: If i thought about "hands that haunt" I would probably quit playing. Instead i learn from my misques, u had A7 pckt. flop was 577. u said u bet, how much that gave u trip 7s. all in would have been my bet. at that point u had him beat. |

| The first big tourney I played online I suffered a bad beat. It was a $109 buyin here on Tilt. It's a GTD tourney now, on Saturday afternoons, but back then it was a $1000 added tourney. With 4 players left I was the short stack, but not by much. UTG, which was also the cutoff, raised it to 3x and I moved all-in with AA. He called, and showed KhJh. He flopped and turned a J and I busted in 4th. I won $2080, but that hand haunted me for about a week. First place was almost 8k. |

I work very hard to NOT think about things like this unless I think I can learn something from it.
In this case there is very little to be learned beyond learning that beats happen and you need to learn to get over them and move on.
So, STOP thinking about beats like this and move on. |

2 years ago and I remember it like it was yesterday. I was HU in a big tourney and blinds are starting to get uncomfortable but still playable. I have chip lead about 60/40.
I get dealt AhKd (obviously a huge hand at this stage). Opponent leads with a pretty decent bet. I shove and he calls with 6d6c. Flop is AcKs9c. YAY for me. Turn is 8c. River is another club My remaining chips were lost shortly after that.
That hand cost me 8k. |

To all the people who are "against" remembering these hands, I wonder what is the logic here. You may try to tell people you don't remember a big "ego buster," but I find it hard to believe that you don't remember 1. No one is saying dwell on it, or let it affect your game. Keep them in your pocket as kind of a reminder that none of us "walks on water" even when you are playing great. I think a humble reminder is beneficial to keep us grounded.
I personally don't know how you are going to get to the point of bad beats (or beets) not affecting you, if you push them out of your mind as soon as they happen. It's part of the game, and you have to learn to accept them. Even though they still piss me off, It reminds me of how good I must be playing to get people committed to pots with a 12% or less chance of winning. (See my Swimming Fish post for 4 good examples) |

Those that dwell in the past will repeat the past. |

The point is that dwelling on bad beats doesn't do anything to improve your game and increases the risk of tilting or believing that the system is rigged.
If it truly is a bad beat then there is nothing to learn beyond learning that bad beats happen. Okay, file that under information and move on. Why dwell on it? (I suppose you would say that someone needs to remember they don't walk on water. So we aren't really disagreeing on this basic point.)
Carrying bad beats around in your memory has a tendency to make you more results oriented. Being results oriented, of course, confuses good play with winning pots. If you made the correct play it doesn't matter whether you won that pot or not...you made the correct play and in the long-run that's all you can do.
If you keep dwelling on bad beats. Running them over in your head thinking about what might have been or wondering if you could have gotten away you'll just waste a lot of time that could be used for improving your game. Why would you want to do that?
Accept that beats happen, then let them go and move on. Don't dwell on them.
If a beat happens because of poor decisions on your part then you should go over them and focus on what you could/should have done differently and why. Again, you want to avoid dwelling on what you did wrong because you risk learning what you did wrong and repeating the mistake. Constantly focus on what you did right or what you should have done and avoid results oriented thinking. |
