I play carefully. One of the things that Doyle Brunson points out in SuperSystem II is that AK, AQ, etc. are strong if you hit, but they are still just drawing hands. If you don't make them, you have nothing but Ace High. AK, AQ, AJ etc. I will ususally put in a decent raise, maybe 3 or 4 big blinds.. My idea there is that I want to get people with borderline hands out of the pot. Even small pockets, which have me beat preflop, might fold if the blinds are high enough and their stacks are not great. The people I want in are the A8 and A9 and KQ, KJ, etc. I have them beat preflop, and I have the smaller aces dominated.
If I don't hit, I am prepared to fold fairly easily unless someone is dumb enough to give me pot odds to stay in. For instance, if the preflop pot is 1000 chips and the flop comes 2 8 10 and some dude bets 250.. Well geez.. He may have hit a pair, but I have 2 overcards and he just gave me 5:1 pot odds. If he makes a pot sized bet so my odds go down to 2:1, I am gone.
QQ, JJ, 1010, etc. I play very similar.. Only difference is that I am very weary of overcards. I will raise 3 or 4 big blinds to thin the field. If there are no overcards on the flop, I will generally bet at least the size the pot. I want to get the AK, AQ, KQ, etc to fold. I never slowplay an all rag flop cause I don't want them to hit on the turn or river and take the pot.
If I hit trips, then its game on. I will bet between half the pot and the pot size, and will continue to do that ever card until they either fold or give me all their chips. The only thing that will change it is if something comes that makes me question whether I have the hand won and their play dictates changing strategy. For instance.. Lets say I have QQ.. The flop comes 10 Q K all spades. I have trips, but there is the possibility of a flush or straight out there, so I might play much more carefully. No reason to give up all my chips just cause I have trips. |
