| You start at the high end. So 7-6 loses to 7-5. That's why your hand is called "7 low" or "7 6 low." |

| That is weird. If you held A2 in your hand you should have won the low. Are you sure you weren't playing razz, or S8B? |

Jaconda's right, 7-6 loses to 7-5 for low, same as razz or triple-draw
From the example, I'd have to say your Ace was counterfeited on the board. You always have to be careful of being counterfeited when going for low. |

| A way to think about it to (mentally) arrange the cards in descending order, count the Ace as 1, and consider them as a 5-digit number. E.g., 75431. The lower number wins. |

All lowball games (triple draw, razz, omaha 8, and stud 8 ) use the same way of measuring hands, with the exception of 2-7 triple draw, where straights and flushes count against you, making the nuts 23457 (aces are high). In stud hi/lo and omaha hi/lo there is a qualifying hand. That is, the low hand cannot have any card higher than an 8 in it. The worst low hand that can be played is then 87654.

Also, quick way to determine nut low (in O 8/b): Starting with A, find the two lowest missing cards. Example: Board reads A 3 6 J K. Lowest missing cards are 2 and 4, so anyone holding them has the nut low.
But yeah, on the premise that a "7 low" beats an "8 low", then to break a tie bewteen two 7 lows, you dismiss the common high card, the see who still has the best low. So comparing
A-2-5-6-7 to A-3-4-5-7,
if you dismiss the common high card (7), you have
A-2-5-6 to A-3-4-5
And it's suddenly obvious who has the better low (the A-3-4-5-7). |

| I thought if you held A2, and the board had 3 cards 8 and under you held the nut low. |

well too late, i dont remember how exactly it was, but i am sure i held A-2 as just few mins before it i read Hellmuths advice to play A-2-xx only in OH/L.
i guess there were four low cards on board and he had some A-5/6/7. |

cchappa is almost right...
The nut low is not always the lowest two missing ranks from the board. If there are four or more cards to a wheel (5-4-3-2-A) on the board, then the nut low is any two cards which can complete a wheel with 3 cards from the board.
Board = A-2-3-4-X, nut lows are 5-A, 5-2, 5-3, 5-4.
Board = 2-3-4-5-X, nut lows are 2-A, 3-A, 4-A, 5-A.
Board = A-2-3-4-5, nut lows are any two cards to a wheel.
But as long as there are no more than three cards to a wheel on the board, then just like cchappa said, the nut low is the two lowest missing ranks from the board. |
