1) should I have raised preflop?
2) What should I have done on the flop?

I wouldn't be raising with that hand, especially OOP. I'd love to see a flop for 50 more chips into a decent starting pot.
I'd hate to be raising with this, only to see a paired flop, or 3 cards to a low. I just don't like to play these types of hands too aggressively, but if you're raising PF, it better be a maximum bet.
As played (and the way that I'd have played it), I would bet out Pot, and hope for a call. If someone hit a straight, you aren't too far behind an unlikely cooler.
I'd be curious to see other PLO8 people's input here. |

| With 4 players to act behind you, I'd check hoping to induce some action from someone else... then you can check/raise it up for the rest of your chips. |

| I think you need to play this hand to get as much money in from as many people as possible. If you isolate the straight you'd be a bit better than a flip to double up. I'd probably half pot it looking for a bunch of callers followed by a raise. Even if there's no raise, that's ok, just get the rest in on the turn or river. Alternatively if you've got aggressive players to your left and loose passive players to your right then obviously you'd be better off check raising. |

As played, I'd prefer to check raise that flop, if I'm VERY confident that someone will bet. Your equity is huge here, even a favorite at this point over the made straight(I think off hand you are 55/45 favorite). If you don't think there'll be a bettor, go ahead and pot it. I don't like giving free card here if possible. If a baby drops on the turn, you will definitely have callers on a bet here and risk splitting with a bare A2-A4. I'm potting this on the turn also, regardless of what drops.
In many instances, OOP, it's fine to just complete here. Can't put too much stock into the idea of the deck being high card heavy because of the numbers of players in already, atleast at this level. Potting it preflop is pretty much commiting you to the hand. You really want to shove when a red baby board peels?
Often with hands like this I'll min. raise here. At the lower levels this can be an incredibly effective tool. Rarely will anyone come over the top(except me ) and you manage to build a large pot while only commiting a small number of chips. I like this here because if the flop misses you completely, it's easy to get away from and was pretty inexpensive. If you hit big like you did, your betting options are all there. You can still shove(basically get it all in)and now 1/2 potting it will be a substantial bet. You will basically have complete control of the pot and force the others to make much harder decisions(IE,more mistakes). |

At the $5 level, it's rare for anyone to fold any draw. It's unlikely, since no one called, that anyone had the flush draw, and obviously no one had the straight. There were probably a lot of weak low draws limping in ahead of you. 10 9 shouldnt be a huge worry, but somebody might always play the a49T rainbow hand just cuz, you know, they could like make a wheel or something. With the possible but unlikely straight out there, and acting first, I may have just bet out 200 and seen who called. Then on the turn, if the board pairs, lure in some more money. If it's a spade or a straight card, make another small value seeming bet, and hope no one has the stone cold nuts and just calls, giving you another chance to pair up for cheap. A low non spade, I'd jam pot immediately, giving low, flush, and straight drawers really bad odds to call.
Of course, your play worked fine so why mess with success. |
