Recently I've been entering in a lot of freeroll NLHE tournaments in order to work on my Hold'em game. I've never given much thought to playing fixed limit because it always seemed like a borefest, but as far as making money goes, it looks like it could be a good idea. Not having to worry about wild bets and maintaining a tight and technical style of play appears like it could be very profitable. Please give your thoughts on FX vs. NL and why you like or dislike one over the other as far as playing on cash tables and in tournaments.
Thank you. |

Cash play:
I originally switched to FL because I imagined that the swings would be less.
They are less abrupt, you never get stacked in a single hand, but it also takes much longer to recover when you cannot take another person's stack in a single hand. If you lose a big pot you often have to win it back one or two bets at a time.
Overall I've found FL to be more swingy than NL.
In part it is because with limited betting it is often correct for opponents to chase their draws. In NL you can make a pot-sized bet and force the draw to fold or take bad odds. In FL you can only bet and force them to pay for their draws. For example, with 7BB in the pot your made hand is a 4-1 favorite over a flush draw on the turn. But since you can only bet 1BB your opponent is getting 8-1 on their call--which is far to good to fold.
If your opponents happen to hit a bunch of draws in a row you can very quickly lose a significant fraction of your stack.
That all said, I still like FL better. It seems to require both more mathematical skill and more finesse. Since you cannot win someone's entire stack in a single hand you are constantly trying to figure out how to pick up an extra bet here or there. And that fits my personality better.
What it boils down to is "what do you like better?" For some people the subtleties of FL are just too good to miss. Others feel that FL (especially at full tables) is like watching paint dry. To some extend you need to figure out for yourself what you are looking for and then go for it.
Cash games are about grinding it out and earning a regular paycheck. Tournaments are about making big paydays periodically.
This sort of rambles....hopefully you'll find something intelligible. |
