Let's use a 1.00 / 2.00 game as an example. If the hand started with no money in the pot the correct strategy would be to wait for a pocket pair of Aces and then bet. With Ace-Ace being dealt to someone every 221 hands this would lead to a deadly boring game.
So someone solved this problem early on with the small blind / big blind bet. The first player to the left of the dealer (small blind) must bet 50 cents and and the next player to the left (big blind) must bet a dollar. This puts a little money in the pot for the rest of the people to fight over. Since the dealer rotates around the table all players end up being a blind the same number of times so no one has a disadvantage but action is encouraged. |

| In addition to what roger39 said, blinds are also an effective alternative to antes. In an ante game (say the 1.00/2.00 game again) everyone would have to pay an ante of 0.15 to 0.25 to get enough money in the pot to fight over. Having .50 chips at a 1/2 table isn't that big of a deal, but does anyone actually want to fool around with nickles when the minimum bet is 1.00? |
