Do you call here preflop? Its two bets, and 54o sucks. But, there is a big pot brewing, my cards are likely live, i have position, and my hand is well hidden. Any thoughts?

$2 into a probable $12 pot, I'd say yes.
Even if one of the blinds raises, it's probably going to be the same odds, just a juiced up pot. |

| No thats an easy fold for me unless I know the raiser and a couple of people in the hand are v. aggressive or unable to lay down a hand. If the average pot on the table is >10BB then I can see it being callable, but in order to be profitable you need to hit hard and then get paid off. I don't think there's any value in it. |

Maybe it's me spewing chips, but I agree with cubbies here. Yes you're going to have to hit a good solid flop, but in a family pot with position, I think your hand is playable here. Plus, and this might also be me spewing a little, but provided you can handle the swings, being the action player on the table can get you paid off when you play a monster from late as well if they see you showdown 54 here. |

No way I play it, not only would you need a great flop you would have to hold up to the river. It's just not profitable to play this hand pretty much ever in full table cash. At this point you're getting a little worse than 4:1 to call ($2 into a $7.50 pot) it's just not worth playing. Also being tricky at the 1/2 level isn't needed. The only way I'd see a flop with this hand at this point is if I held it in the BB.
This should be an easy automatic fold nearly every time you hold this hand despite odds at full table cash. |

Would I play it: very likely. I enter a lot of pots when I get 6-1 or better. I am much more likely to play this sort of hand if there is no one behind me who is likely to raise.
Should I play it: Don't think so. I really feel like I've been spewing chips on this kind of play. Even if it is +EV I'm adding a ton of variance that I don't typically need to add and that I don't particularly care for.
So, you can do as I do or do as I tell you. |

You bring up a very good point. You may be getting odds but you also have to consider your skill level in the play for the rest of the hand and the skill level of your opponents. Will they fold if your bets say they're beat? Will free card plays work against them. Things of that sort IMO make this hand not worth playing despite the odds. |

Yeah, things have changed. I've been reading/hearing a lot about the strength of online play going up, and I believe it. When I play these speculative hands I am much less likely to get paid off than I once was. I think that's why these aren't as playable as they once were. |

no you dont play it simply because its limit poker with alot of players involved and you have to catch the flop big time.
if a flop falls A 4 5. theres a large amount of action before it gets to you a pot bet from some1 with AK a call from AQ and maybe a raise from an aggressive player with a str8 or flush draw . then the action comes to you.... your only 50/50. deep stacked or n/l a big raise would possibly work but stack sizes on your table mean both the other 2 players get odds to call you.
sooo fold pre... |

See i disagree. With a hand like 54o in LIMIT, you don't have to hit the flop hard. In fact, you probably prefer not to hit it too hard on the flop (ie two pair). If i flop a 4 or a 5, i will likely have odds to chase my 5 outer the rest of the way, so long as the action does not get too heavy. Also, with so many players cold calling two bets, its likely many have two high cards. So if the flop comes all low with a 4 or 5, i may even have the best hand and can play cautiously until i see another card.
Obviously hitting trips would be nice, but i'm looking for a str8 draw that i will have odds to chase and will be well hidden if i do hit it, or a small pair that i can chase profitably to the river, and still easily fold on the river if i miss.
Anyway, in the hand, i did fold PF. But i just wanted some feedback. |
