I love poker and I've been studying about it for more than a year now. I have been reading several books like Super System II, The theory of poker, In the money, Ace on the river and some others.
Most of them handle the same subjects. Starting hand requirements, position, pot odds, implied odds, betting strategies... I understand those concepts now and I want to start out playing for some money.
My best games are limit holdem and pot limit Omaha.
I thought that being able to play the odds would make me a successfull player, but it doesn't. I started out at the playmoney tables and it is always the same.
All in all in all in. It makes me sick. The books teach me what kind of bets to call and to fold, but the fish force me to fold constantly. 95% of the players I met are a total waste of time.
What is the best advice for me to develop my skills ? I'm just over 18 and my parents don't want me to deposit, allthough I'm probably going to.
I want to develop my game so bad, but the playmoney tables simply don't allow me to do that. What should I do ? I feel like I'm standing still.
I don't know if I'm a good player, my No limit holdem is probably not that good. On the other hand, I'm extremely good at calculating odds at any stage of a hand. That's why I prefer shorthanded No limit Omaha High and Pot Limit Holdem.
I play in other poker rooms as well, and it's like that everywhere. Playmoney sucks. On other forums, people told me to make a small deposit. Others tell me not to do that because bad low stake players and the rake will make me go broke again. They say I need to buy in for at least $10 if I want to play some solid poker. I'd need at least a $300 bankroll for it but that's to much for an experiment ( my parents would kill me if they found out about it )
Any thoughts or advice ? |

I consider myself a fairly good PLO player, that and razz are my best games.
I play at the play money tables, and do really well there, one time I got up to
about 9 times the max buy-in at the 25/50 table. I'm not sure about your certain style, and I know what you mean about the donkey's raising every single hand, they're playing as if it's hold'em, and think KQ25 is good. My advice is stay patient, play at tabes with more people so the blinds come to you less, and wait for premium flops, then just push. And don't try to bluff with nothing, it will usually not work. |

Jesus Ferguson is not the only one who went from zero to lots of money on line. 18 year old Annett Obrestad started by playing in freeroll tournaments (they have those at Full Tilt, don't they?), won and then built a small bankroll into a big one. According to interviews, Annette NEVER made a cash deposit to an on line poker site and she went from playing freerolls to a $15,000 bankroll in less than two years. You can watch her play by searching for a player under Annette_15 when she is playing.
I would recommend you play in freeroll tournaments. In the freeroll tournaments, yes you have to deal with some all in idiots on the first few hands, but after the first few levels, I think the play settles down to playing like cash tournament poker.
I have also experienced a lot of cash and live tournaments where some players are extremely aggressive during the early going (they figure to have a bully stack or not waste their time). You have to learn to deal with them as well as the folks that play conservative "By The Book" poker.
Good luck! |
