Who needs an education when you can be a degenerate gambler? I think a lot of people here can empathise with the struggle between wanting to play poker and needing to do some work, but for me that wasn't going to be an issue. I knew that when I returned to uni last week I wouldn't be able to play poker as the network blocked the client software, so I would have plenty of time to study. Unfortunately I was wrong and somehow I can now log onto FT & Stars and I'm faced with the same dilemma.

Problem 2 is that I only have 12c in my FT account and $53.40 in my stars account so unless I reload all my money back in, I'm a little short of my usual $200 buyin game.

Problem 3 FTOPS is less than a month away and I'm looking to play an event.

So the possible solutions are to:

a) study and forget about poker
b) try and turn $53.52 into $216 for a FTOPS event
c) reload

Option a leaves me a little bored, and tempting as option c is, I'm going for b and starting yesterday I'm playing $10 HU SNGs and trying to grind up to $216.

And before y'all start going on about BRM... I think that these are within my bankroll when combined with my ability at LHE. The quality of the opponents is generally terrible, and the blinds seem to stay low forever so skill will almost always prevail.

Hopefully when this is all over I'll be able to write a nice long informative post on playing HU LHE tournament style.

Fire Eyes, let me know how it goes. I consider LHE to be my best game, but never play it HU. Also, I'd love to play you sometime (either $2 or $5 as I don't have a big bankroll) for fun. Good luck on your quest for FTOPS!

I say play poker, but don't neglect your studies. Set aside a specific amount of time each day for poker, and use the rest for school/social life. Don't screw up your education for poker.

In all honesty building a roll in LHE SNGs would be akin to slowing grinding ones body in a small meat grinder. I honestly don't think it's possible using LHE SNGs to build a roll up.

Also, and I'm not saying this to be an ignorant prick, but according to the OPDB tournaments are not your strong point...

How are you at NL cash? Because honestly .15-.25 SHNL is IMO the way to go to get a roll started, that or grinding the low buy-in NL SNGs. The LHE SNGs become a luck fest near the end, where as in a NL one you can control the variance a bit more.

I can't see how any amount of skill would make 5 buy-ins a big enough bankroll for SNG's.

But still, GL.

Most SNGs I agree entirely, but HU Limit ones with the structure of 1500 starting stack and 10 minute blinds of 5/10, 10/20, 15/30, 25/50, 40/80. Skill really is a huge factor here.

Anyway, end of day 2, and I've played I think 13 $10s and a $5. My account balance is currently at $113 so it's going well. Had a 6 game winning streak which was nice, and so far, the hardest opponents have been the truly awful ones who I can't read at all. Those with some grasp of LHE seem to roll over fairly easily.

And who voted that I suck at LHE?

Exactly.

Play a variation on the Ferguson challenge if you like or reload if you prefer, but do not jeopardize your education for poker.

Maybe you are the next superstar and will play poker successfully for a living for many years. But what if a year or two into it you decide that playing poker is only fun as a hobby? Then what?

Or, if you crash and burn, then what? Sure, there is always the fast food industry, but is that really what you want as a back up plan?

I dropped out of college due to gaming. Too bad poker wasn't around back then. Do whatever you feel like. It's your life. Not having a degree != fast food industry but if you want to graduate then play accordingly.

I have no doubt that you can run your roll up to play an FTOPS game. Run it up higher though, so you still have a roll if you don't cash. Good luck dude.

Didn't know you meant HU play... yeah you'll be playing total donks at the 5 and 10 level HU. Now that's more doable, although, it is for sure a rough grind.

Well I've just passed the $200 mark. I'm going to try to get to $300-350 so I have some cash to spend on MBJ stuff and I can carry on playing if I don't cash in FTOPS. Couple of 7-match winning streaks so far and I don't think I've lost more than 2 in a row yet.

So far I'm intending to write some essay posts on the following:

1. Being Agressive in HU LHE (a real problem I noticed in the MBJ HULHE league from a while ago)
2. Playing a maniac vs playing a grandpa
3. Playing weaker hands postflop (From bottom pair to J high)
4. Preflop requirements (that could be short)
5. Button vs. First to act

Anyone got any requests on further topics? Post or PM me.

Well I was having a bit of a rough time of it, gone down from $200 to $180, then the internet in my room died for a week and a half so I couldnt play at all. That effectively put an end to my desire for the challenge, so I'm just going to buy into the ftops event. Ridic was right, it was very boring.
