my favorite money maker? HOOTERS baby!!!! nobody good is ever there, and most of the time the tables are packed with employees blowing half their check haha!

i love this thread hehehe ... i was in vegas for blackhat and defcon 2 months ago and stayed in 5 different hotels in 5 days, so heres a mega review !!

ok first thing you need to know if this is your first time visit, if you want to do vegas CHEAP, you gotta be DOWNTOWN. of course you wanna see some stuff on the strip as well, but all the cheap drinks, gift shops, and poker tourneys are to be found downtown.

the rooms at the plaza are 30 bucks a night, and the biggest ones i have seen in vegas (dont ask me how that works ... its just downtown). the room is nothing special apart from the size and the hotel is mostly full of old ppl.

cheapest poker sng i found was in fitzgerald (downtown), 30 buy in, 15 addon and 15 rebuy in the first hour. weekends its more expensive. during weekdays you'll play aboiut 25 or 30 ppl, and apart from the fact that all the locals / regulars seem to come there, its very winnable.

im really not a great player and made 5th and 4th place (3rd place is in the money ... rats) when i was there. my wife was also doing good and making the final table. i did see the same ppl there come back and there was even a house dealer who was playing on his day off. still i think the competition there is very beatable.

I'm not posting a review but thought this might be a good place to ask a ? My husband and I are thinking about getting away for about 3 weeks in January or February and Vegas seems like a spot to get a nice golf/gamble/hotel deal. Any thoughts?

If you're looking for a cheap hotel room take a look at the Imperial Palace. Probably the cheapest place to stay on the center strip.

I am going to Vegas in two weeks and I just started playing poker a few months ago, I have been doing ok, but am no where near good yet. Anyone have any suggestions on where to go play in Vegas when you are still beginner?

Go to some of the lesser known rooms, like the Imperial Palace, O'Shea's, or anywhere downtown. There are several rooms, even on the strip, that offer a $2-4 limit game, which is good for beginners.

Treasure Island:

Cash: Small room. Not much action other than the occasional tourist that comes in and blows $300 in 10 minutes.

Tournament: The $65 rebuy tournaments at TI run every 3-4 hours or so, and usually have ~3-4 tables participating. Although their poker room is small, it was probably one of the more fun tournaments there. To be fair, it was more luck poker because of the fast rise in blinds, but the low quality of a lot of the players there made it worthwhile.

Venetian:

Cash: Craziest $1/2 I have ever played in my life. I was in line for the $2/5 or whatever it was when I decided to spend my time at the $1/2. Every pot was $200+ for a good 30 minutes. Good mix of loose action and tight regulars.

Tournament: $150 Nooner is probably one of the best deep stack tournaments I've ever played. 7500 starting chips, 30 minute levels. You really can't ask for more.

Planet Hollywood:

Cash: EASIEST cash game in Vegas. So many foreign tourists go there and gamble away their money. My friend and I almost made $2000 in 3 hours at their $1/2.

Tournament: Not too great. Structure promotes flips after about the first hour and a half.

As for rooms, Excalibur is pretty cheap. Didn't visit any other noteworthy places. I did hear that Binions had some great tournaments though.

But as someone mentioned before, the number of hot girls was extraordinary (although they were almost always with some rich-looking older guy).

Luxor:

I stayed there during my time in Vegas a few weeks ago, and I felt it was well worth the money. The casino itself isn't very well lit, but the employees working there took care of my friends and I whether we asked or not. For instance, on my first night there I was stuck in a smoking room, but the front desk promised me they'd give me a smoke-free room within 12 hours when a room opened up. Sure enough, I was not only in a smoke-free room the next morning, but our room was also upgraded to one of the finer rooms in the hotel.

BTW: Do not play in the Luxor's $30 + $3 tournament. The structure is just awful.

The casino isn't anything to write home about, as I found it just average. The poker room is very small, and I found that during peak hours only three or four tables were running. The dealers themselves were average, but very friendly. If you are looking for a much cleaner, well-lit casino, the Luxor connects to Mandalay Bay, and although the poker room there isn't great either, it's much more aesthetically pleasing.

As for food, the Luxor has a food court full of franchise places such as McDonald's, Nathan's, etc. On average, you'd pay about one to two bucks more here for a meal than you would at home. Oh, and for those of you who love the Mickey D's dollar menu, you're out of luck since one isn't here.[/u]

Great! I'm getting ready to book 4 days @ the Luxor. What can you tell me about that $30 tourny? Why so bad? Anything else you can add about the Luxor?
