I am a new player to limit as I started out in no limit, however I wish to be able to be a well rounded player. In no limit, I usually play high/mid pairs strongly where as in limit this does not work as well because there are so many callers. Also I like to play a j - a k strongly in no limit, but in limit these hands seem to get beat and they are so hard to get away from. What would anyone give as a premium or their favorite hands for limit and how they usually play them?

Since no one else has replied yet:

You should still play the high pairs strongly. Raise and reraise AA-QQ. Jacks, if it has been raised once or not at all. Your advantage is preflop, so you want to try to knock as many people out of the hand as possible. If people call, you will still win enough of those hands to make up for the times that you get rivered. Of course, if there are 3 to a flush and straight on the board, and people are raising and reraising after the flop, it's better just to give it up unless you have quality outs (flush draw, etc).

AK is still a powerful hand, but the thing to remember is that if you don't have at least a pair or 2 overcards PLUS a good draw, you just need to give it up to a flop bet. With a lot of outs, though, you should continue in a large pot. AQ and AJ, though, are often beaten. Play these with discretion--suited is much stronger--then look at the texture of the flop and decide whether they're worth any more bets.

I assume you are talking about low limits so if you arent this probably isnt the best adviceHigh pairs should always be played strongly, get as much money in the pot as you can with these monsters, so when they hold up, the pot u win will be really big. Mid to small pairs do better against a lot of action, so limp with them when the game is loose or passive or preferrably both. If the game is tight, or you are in real early position, its usually better to lay these hands down because they have a negative EV. As far as suited connectors, suited aces, and other drawing hands, its usually best to play these in loose, passive conditions, and usually in later position. For example, if you are in late position with J10s, you should usually limp if there are 3 limpers before you, and you should tend to fold when it has been folded to you or raised in front of you. A lot has been made about AK being not all its cracked up to be, but for me, it is by far my most profitable hand. (More profitable than AA, KK, and QQ combined is what pokertracker says) AK, AQ, and even AJ are big big hands in limit.

Thats a good rule of thumb, but just watch out for the really aggressive players. If you are heads up with an agressive player, and you have raised before the flop, the agressive player will often bet simply at the site of rags. There is a good chance that even if you hit nothing on the flop, AK high will often still be the best hand (in a heads up or 3 handed flop). You really have to know your opponents and use your own judgement to make the best of these situations.

I refer you to page 80 in Small Stakes Hold 'Em by Miller, Sklansky, and Malmuth. I have also made their suggestions into an easy to use (for me, at least) spreadsheet - I'd be happy to give it to you if you send me a message on aim (Jaconda78) or email me at junkmailonly101@yahoo.com.
