The chimp and 50,000 people are of course extreme examples, but they show a point - marriage is a topic that must be well thought out - not simply "let people do what they want" - unless, of course, the governemt steps out of it altogether, as I think they should. Marriage should not affect taxes, and should be something that the government has no part in.

At it's base that is the issue. It's not whether 5 people can live a happy life with one chimp in some weird beastio-bisexual orgy pact, really, is it? It's about whether wife #3, husband #2, and the chimp get healthcare benefits and count as dependents for tax purposes, right? Let's not pretend that this is all about morals and religion. There are those with vested financial interests in this issue as well.

i am a proud bush fan! i also hate blind bush-bashing as well, but people are allowed to speak their mind.

also, i may be a bush fan, but i think gay marriage should be allowed. its wrong to stop two humans from getting married no matter what their sex is. hopefully, one day, people who hate gays will open their minds up a little and see that disallowing gays to marriage is like saying that a black man cant marry a white woman

Funkay, being against gay marriage doesn't mean that you hate gays. You can be against it for religious reasons (and still not hate gays - believe me, I know plenty such people. They don't approve of it, but they also stay out of their business, mostly), or have other issues with it, as I do. Don't oversimplify the topic.

I know that one main reason gay marriage isn't allowed has to do with religious reasons. Bush has stated many times because of his beliefs that he does not agree with gay marriage. The question I have is, doesn't this cross the line of religion and government?

Actually, the 1st amendment that specifically codifies the separation of church and state basically says that the government cannot make any laws to establish a state religion or prohibit the free exercise of religion. It has nothing to do with whether or not a man's religion (including the president's) can or cannot be a moral compass in the decision making process.
