What are premium Omaha hands?

Like for Hold'em they would be hands like AA, KK, AK, AQ etc.

I know of hands like AA23 and AAxx, but what are some other hands that are playable in Omaha?

First O8 is a whole different animal. Keep in mind everyone in is holding 6 combo of 2 card hands to match the flop. If its out there ex. flush someone has it. Maybe not the nut flush, but someone has a flush.

Basically you want ideally 4-5 of the 6 combo to be playable in a multiway pot. You need a lock on the low end and possibilties for the high. AK23 ds for ex. AK,A2,A3, A2s, K3s with K2 not s to be the only leak in the hand.

There isn't really a hand that just crushes all others like AA in Holdem. With that said:

O8 hands (Strength Approx.) = Holdem hands

AA23ds = AA kinda......
A2XX = AK
A23Kss = AKs
A3XX = AQ
A4XX = AJ
A5XX = AT

Any hand with 7,8,9 in them is pretty much trash because basically you are holding a blank. (Like A2, the 2 is pretty much a blank.) So you just went from 6 combo to like 3 combo. Severly limiting your flexibility during the hand.

Naked QQ,KK,JJ,TT can be played, but if you don't hit a set they are pretty useless in a low limit game with too many ppl in. When you do hit a set, its approx hitting TPBK in holdem. ex. Q8 on a QJ7 flop. You've got a good hand, but nothing that can come on the turn is going to make you happy.

My personal fav is KQJT, A234, 2345, 3456, 2346, A256. The 6 is very important. Mainly because when 2 ppl got the nut low which happens alot. and both got the wheel, that 6 is going to make you a happy guy. (You would quarter the guy because of your higher str8).

M A G N S O E has given you some pretty solid information on quality hands.

Many players will say position is not important in O8b. They are wrong. I think there are a few hands that play well from any position and the are the tightest hands given by M A G N S O E.

The more high cards in your hand the closer to the button you'd like to be.
Because there are more low cards in the deck, there is a higher probability that two or more low cards will come. If you are holding KK, QQ, JJ, or TT as part of you hand, you don't want to invest in raised pot and have to dump for much when you miss. High cards are basically garbage when two low cards hit the board. You are religated to drawiing for 1/2 the pot (so you pot odds are cut in half.

Sets are deceptively bad in O8b, unless the board pairs. By the time you reach the river, there will be enough connectors for someone to make a str8 or suits to make flushes.

You cannot put enough pressure on a made low to get them to fold a weak flush when you are pushing a set. The low hand would be free-rolling you for all the bets you put in the pot.

Free-rolling is O8b is your worst nightmare when your opponent has a free-roll hand. They can jam you up and you'd be drawing to get your money back to break even. If you find yourself on the wrong end of a free-roll, your best action is to fold early.
