| So far my favorite books are Dan Harrington's. I like his style for tournaments and small ball really helps to see where you stand. A couple of friends that I play with seem to adhere to the first SS as words of gold by Doyle Brunson, which to me doesn't make sense, since his section in the first book was more for cash games than tourneys. When we play hold'em, it's 95% of the time a tournament. When we play cash, its usually limit 7 card stud low Chicago with a burn. |

By far the best first post....EVER.
I agree with Graveyard Train that Harrington's books are must read for tournament play.
Can't wait for the new Harrington books geared toward cash games which should be released soon. |

well...they for sure can't hurt...
but as everyone should know experience is tool #1
i truly believe you can read everybook ever writen about NL holdem
and you will not make a nickel, until you understand the experince factor.
you have to be able to read players and bet patterns to really understand whats going at THE TABLE...not what you read about.
but DH's books are good..Im told.. |

Any good books for Cash and Sit and Go tables specifically?
How do you guys like that odds and probabilities book? Does it have a list of every hand vs. every hand that I can memorize? |

| The first poker book I read was Negreanu's. It was slightly helpful for me as a beginner, but since then I have picked up Phil Gordon's green and blue books, and they are both awesome. They are both very well written, and I learned a lot of good stuff reading them. |

It's the best book out there way better than his other books I also recommend 52 tip for advanced players by Barry Shulman phil gordons books all 3 as well as HoH's books all 3 |

I think the key is knowing the people who's books you are gonna read. For instance, I would consider it a waste of time to read the work of a very analytical player if you don't have the background in mathematics to understand what they are saying. It is probably a waste of time to read a book on poker tells if you only play online.
In addition, as Doyle Brunson says, it is probably a good idea to chose authors who have a long consistent record of winning at the highest levels.. Guys like Doyle, Dan Harrington, Slansky, etc. are good choices. Billy Joe Bob's Big Book of Backyard Poker (joke) is probably not such a good choice.
Lastly, I would study people who have a similar style to you but have risen to the next level.. That will give you best information on how to raise your game. |

With regard to Phil Gordon, I was chatting with him from the rail a while back and he said the black book is a very good introduction to poker for someone who does not really understand the game, but it would probably not be that beneficial for those who do.. He recommends the Green and Blue books very highly for people at any level. |
