This is now the third month in a row that I have made over 5k in the first 3+ weeks of 1/2 PLO and then lost is all in just a couple of days at the end of the month.... I don't know what I can do to avoid this (well other than not to play the last week each month). Today I am down 12 buyins about 2.4k) ... and only 3 of those was I less than 60% to win when the $ went in, one I had top trips TK he had boat (me 38% 2 win) another I had nut wrap against top set but he had a couple of my outs so i was a 2/1 dog, and the last one I had top set against bottom set with str8+ flush draw so it was 50/50.... Other than that I ran the odds and was between 60-90% when the $ went in and have yet 2 win one. I know this is a high variance game but by dumb luck I have to win at least a couple of those.
If I only win 3/10 instead of the 6/10 statistics say I shoudl win and I am only down a couple of buyins which is managable... I am not one of those conspiracy online poker is rigged guys but I am at a loss to explain how this has happened for teh third month in a row. First month I figure just bad luck at the wrong time in a high variance game, second month I started to think I must be playing the game wrong (and PART, but only a part of teh loses were due to that), but now this is the third month this has happened... I'll even say that probably a quarter to a third of the losses are due to me tilting or making crying calls, but I'm only human... but that does still not explain how I can lose all the rest of the money on bad beats (by omaha standards) 10k is still 50 buyins which is way outside any normal variance, and never hit any of my hands to lose all my profits in a couple of days at the end of each month for THE THIRD MONTH IN A ROW! Someone please help me get a grip on this cause it is driving me crazy. |

Omaha is a crazy game with a lot of big hands and big draws. Most hands that you are still playing after the flop end up all in, either with flopping the nuts or flopping a powerful draw. Variance is going to happen big time in this game. Its a game where even if you flop the nuts, you could be an underdog against more than 1 opponent.
Now, i won't sit here and give you omaha advice. I play the 5/10c PL table just for the enjoyment and learning of the game. I am by no means an omaha expert. But i suggest maybe you move down in limits. You'll be playing easier competition and risking less money. Practice making reads, maybe read some books, and be patient. If you truly believe you are good at the game, then the profits will eventually come. Don't tilt! |

| What is your bankroll? Sounds like to me you are playing way over it. |

Ok so you should never lose more then 1800 in a day, assuming you have $18,000. Once you lose 10% in a day take a break. |

Yeah, you're right, and the way I am I should probably stop after getting down by more that 1k cause I have rarely turned that into a winning day. The problem is once I am at that point I am usually on tilt already and no longer thinking clearly and have a very hard time stopping if the people I lost to are still at the table. I guess how to deal with that and controll it so that I can just walk away once I get to that point is what I am looking for advice on the most.
I actually ended up last month up about 2.5k but lost that much the previous one so I am just about even on the year. Started out this month with $14500 and my goal is to actually finish the month with a banckroll of 20k. Given that each of the last 3 month I have been up over 5k for the month at some point I think that is a realistic goal, but I would like any advice on actually keeping it this time instead of losing most of it in a couple of bad days. |

It always amuses me when people quote Doyle Brunson, saying that NL holdem is the Caddillac of poker, the it takes courage and heart. It does, of course, Doyle knows what he is talking about but pot limit omaha is running rings around it in volatility and, most of the time, pot size.
I love this game above all other poker variations but playing at $0.25/$0.50 my advice will not help you very much. At those levels it's the three P's: patience, patience and pounding (when you have the best of it).
To qoute T.J. Cloutier: 'This game can chew up your money so fast, it'll make your head spin.'
The only advice I can give, one that's true for all levels and all forms of poker, is stop loss, as UFO1947 said. |
