I just read Howard's Lesson 1. I'd like to point out one more reason to play tight early in a SNG: it can keep you in the game. Howard alluded to this.
I play $10 to $50 buy-in SNGs. At those levels, it seems that a good one fifth to one quarter of the entrants are all-in crazy.
I've found that, a lot of times, if I place a bet in a hand early in the tournament, somebody will try to get into a betting war with me and draw me all-in. I generally don't like to go all-in unless I have a pretty good idea that I've already won, so I find myself backing down.
I basically just give chips away if I bet too early in a SNG, unless, of course, I'm sitting on a monster. Even then it's risky. I've had pocket kings beat by pocket 3 4, so even the monsters can be slain pretty easily. |

| If you don't take a stand against these maniacs early, you'll find yourself so beaten down that by the time you DO pick up a hand, you'll need it to hold up just to get back to even! If you think you have even a slight edge, you want to take advantage of it as early as possible. It's better for you, and it should stop the maniacs from doing it to you in the future. |

Maniac players should be raised and reraised with any strong hand. Since their starting hands are considerably weaker than most, you don't need monsters to raise them. You'll have the better hand most of the time.
One time I was playing a $10+1 sng, and a maniac player was raising everyone, then showing some very weak hands. When I picked up AJs I decided I would try to teach him a lesson. So I just limped. He was on the BB, and I knew he would raise. Sure enough he raised big, and I reraised all-in. He called, and showed suited connectors. Anyway, he made a straight, but that's not the point.
I had the better hand, but I got unlucky. So I made notes, and I'll get him back....if he has any money left. |

| i love it when i find a few maniacs at my tables... they pretty much fit into the category of dead money, so its really easy to take their chips as long as you pick your spots... |

Being female I have to say I LOVE the maniacs. Especially the "frat-boy, cool-dude, tough-guy" maniacs. It's sooooo easy to take their money and to put them on tilt all at the same time. They never expect it from a girl.
All the books say that you should play in a manner that is opposite your opponents. Maniacs are loose-agressive so I play tight-passive. That is, I limp into pots with premium hands, I call their raises after the flop and turn, then when they raise on the river I nail them with a huge re-raise or an all-in with the nuts.
The look on their face is priceless! Some even start to blubber...."WHAT?!?!" "What do you mean all-in?!?!", "I can't believe you trapped me!!!!", "SH*T!", "You B*TCH!!!", "Damn, take the pot!".
After that they usually go on tilt and any pre-flop raise from me will get them to fold their hands and I take their money.
LOVE THE PSYCHO FISHIES!!!! |

Lol. Lepoppet, I know EXACTLY what you mean. I play in a game at my dorm 6 days a week, and half those guys STILL can't handle being beat by a girl. The good players in the game (not many) have, of course, learned to treat me just like any other player, but some of the macho ones still love to try to run all over me 'cause I'm a weak little female...
Nothing like hearing, "****" at the poker table - it usually means I just won a hand... |

Lol,
I hate playing against girls. I can never tell if they really don't know what they're doing, or just putting on an act. |

when i sit down w/ a girl at a table, i found out that when they get uncomfortable, they sit straight up and put their hand(s) near their neck... same thing goes for guys, except they put their hand(s) over their mouth... when a girl does this, it usually means they are weak... |

Good to note....Thanks KB...I'll be sure to use this one tomorrow in my live tourney. Of course, I'll put my hand over my mouth when I'm STRONG instead of weak just incase one of my opponents is reading this thread.
Unfortunately, manipulating these tells don't work so good when your playing online. No one really cares if you sit up straight or not. At least I still look "cool" wearing my sunglasses while I play.

| Haha - yea. I love making up tells, getting my opponents used to them, and then using it in a massive hand. I usually use them when I have a strong hand, and then later to bluff. I've had the drumming of fingers on the table, the playing with my chips, the looking away from the game, sitting up straight, getting really talky, getting really quiet (different games, obviously), and several others that I can't remember off the top of my head. It's great - they get so sure of themselves - "fold - she has the nuts. remember last time she drummed her fingers like that?" Hehe... |
