Playing 6-max I never open limp and only rarely just call a limper. Last night I got an object lesson reminding me why I raise so much.

I'm playing 6-max and find myself on the button with 66. UTG +1 limps and I decide to take a chance on the 6s so call. SB completes and BB checks.

The flop comes 6 4 3

BINGO! I've flopped top set on a non-threatening board--time to make some money.

Opps, I'm on the phone taking a message for my wife and I've got a preflop hand worth seeing a flop with on my other table. No problem, I've got a freakin' set on a non-threatening board...bet/raise at every opportunity.

The BB and I cap the flop and turn and I'm thinking I'm gonna get rich.

But after the turn is capped I start to sense something is wrong. I'm still getting the message for my wife and since I can't figure out what's going on I slow down on the river.

BB flips over 5-2o, the nut straight!

Talk about your big blind special Sad

Why do we raise preflop...to get rid of bad hands in the blinds that might get luckier than we do.

in my experience it doesn't really matter if you raise on the button because idiots usually call me out of the big blind with 5-2 off suit anyways.
