| Are there standard conventions for the rate at increasing the blinds in a tournament game? |

I remember Andy Bloch posting once that he liked FTP's blind structure because they never increased more than 40% at a time.
I play live tourneys where they double every 20 mins. It becomes a crapshoot, but it can be fun, and the whole tourney lasts just over 3 hours.
Of the two I prefer FTP's blind structure. If I were running a live tourney I'd use it, but increase every 20-30 mins or so, instead of 10. |

Please just make sure you are playing a tournament game. A local group who have an occassional ring game double the blinds every hour. Apparently I'm the only one that didn't learn poker from tv and it drives me nuts because at the end of the night the game starts getting increasingly random.
If it really were tournament style I'd have no problem with this. But it's a ring game. |

Lol - that's actually really funny. We had a guy come to the never-ending game at my dorm and try to convince us that the blinds were supposed to go up every 30 minutes - we eventually stopped trying to explain the difference to him and just told him to shut up and deal with it... |

| For the few home tournaments I have hosted, I have used Full Tilt's blind structure and changed them up every 30 minutes. Everyone seems to enjoy that structure. It keeps the game moving along and at the same time, it's not too fast to where it's just an all in crap shoot. |

Hahaha. Classic! ^
I was at a club once, and they changed the blinds (at the request of several others, not uncommon) from 1-2 NL, to 2-5 NL. When I got up to leave, someone asked why I was leaving. When I told him I didn't want to play 2-5 he said, "Why, aren't you man enough?"
I told him, "There's no shame in knowing when you're in over your head. Oh, and you should probably think about leaving too." |

when i play home games, they usually involve anywhere between 6-15 players (we play tournaments)... anyways, when we have a short handed game, i like to have the blinds doubled every 45 minutes... reason i do this is b/c we have fun while playing, so we would like to play poker w/ eachother for at least an hour before ppl start getting busted out...
if i have 8 ppl or more, we have blinds go up faster not only so that the game goes by quicker, but so that ppl dont camp into the money (usually top 2 or 3) |

Great line! I'll have to remember that one.
As for the actual topic of blind structures. I run a cheap NL ring game where we keep the same low blinds throughout until we get down to a couple of the more serious players (most of the "rookies" just bust out of their original buy-in and call it a night). Once it gets down to 4 or 5 of us, we'll bump them up at will just to keep the action going. |
