It can be done. It was a lot easier in the "old" days where there were some really good freerolls around. I used to play some site that had like a 10-11pm $100 freeroll where only 800 could sign up (and usually only about 700 signed up and 200-300 would never show up to play). First was like $27. That's how I started mostly because I was worried about putting any banking info online at all. I just played those like 4-5 times a week for about 6 months. That got me up to $1000 mixing in playing small SNG's and stuff. That's basically what I'm still playing with. I cash out a lot to pay bills and stuff so I don't really consider it a "bankroll". It's probably harder now since the payouts are smaller and more people playing in each but I'm sure it's still possible. The real problem is with the small payouts you have to cash in quite a few freerolls to have any kind of money in your account, then it's probably going to take a decent run to build your bankroll high enough to play even the really small levels. I occasionally will do it on sites I don't really play at much just for fun and I usually take whatever I win and I'm willing to take some risks to bump it up to $50-$100 before I really get serious about growing it. Below that level I'll buy in for the entire amount but I'm also not terribly worried if I lose it.

dmoore I agree with you, there used to be loads of freerolls that would actually payout 'real money' without having to deposit first as is the mainly norm now , that is what has kept me here at FTP, and as you say it was rare for them to fill up.
Everything I've ever won has been sqaundered, but it has been fun, probably only about $70-80 altogether(been about 5/6 years i been online). I managed to place for the first time here FTP to pick up $2!!!(get in there!), played 3 $1 SnG altogether, so it was OKish, but in answer to the original question, I havent made my fortune.....yet?! of the freerolls, one day.
Long live the Freerolls!!

I won $15 by winning first place in FTP $100 freeroll. I played the $1 and $2 sng and got it up to $38. I moved to ring games and lost it all. I will win another and will apply better $$ management tactics.

Also got the FTP points up to 124.75 which I used 100 in a Aussie tourney.

Currently have $0 and 24.75 FTP points. Can Points be transferred?

BTW... this is my first post.

Here is my first post too. I just joined, I've played 3 freerolls now, placed 3rd in one for $9, and played one $1 tourny and just missed the money after a pretty bad beat. So I'm at $8, definately nothing to brag about. I seem to still make a lot of mistakes, but I'm trying to learn from them.

I wanted to post becuase what everyone says doesn't match what I've read. I was under the impression that a great SNG player can make 20% of the buyin over the long run. So in a $1+0.25 thats $0.25 profit per SNG. I just read in Harrington's book that a good tournament player will average 500%-600% of his buyin each tournament, or even more against a large and/or weak field. Sure, MTTs take a little longer, but if you're making 30 times as much money on average, its clearly the way to go.

I'm a poker newbie and happy to admit it (although at ultimate bet I'm up to $46 now, to keep this thread-relevant. BTW awful site for freerolls -- you need to earn points first (easy to get a few .. but you need 275 points to enter a real $1+.10 tourny)). So if you guys who know more can verify or debunk my info here please do so. I'd love to hear more about MTT vs SNG EVs, particularly as I try to build a bankroll from scratch myself.

Why? Not trying to be a smart arse... genuinely curious. I was thrilled to see him at a $5 sit and go tonight and played with him. If what you are saying is true it explains why he's hanging out down at that level.

Went busto with my first $50 deposited at pokerstars and used to fpps i earnt to enter a few of the $5k and $1k anniversary games they are running at the moment. Picked up 50c in one and started donking off 40c playing limit (needed $1 to sit at NL).

Remembered when I was down to 10c that there are micro tourneys with value added so used my remaining 10c to enter the 10c + $50 added. Cashed in that for 22c. Didn't cash in the next nor any other fpp tourneys I entered. With my last 10c I just took out a 1,679 player tourney for $39 and some change - my first big tourney win (wish it was a higher buy in though hehe).

End brag, will see how far I can make this run for.

i also read that and it kind of confused me, but im pretty sure online (especially low limits?) its a completely different story. 500-600% of his buyin each tourny in a 1$ tourny basically means you FT or make the final 18 every single game. thats just not gonna happen.

I've spent maybe 4 hours since I posted that total searching online for any informed discussion of MTT EVs. I can't find a thing. I had a hard time finding SNG info too actually. I just played another $1 MTT at Ultimate Bet and made the FT (10 per table), and won a whopping $4.27 for 10th place (66K flop, I push all-in with 4th largest stack, M=9ish, after a pot-sized raise holding 64 from the BB. He (3rd stack, just has me covered) calls and shows 69. Turn is 4, river is 9. Busted 10th when I could have limped into more money). But what I'm saying is even making the FT I didn't come close to the 500-600% "average" a good player should get.

If anyone has some numbers to share, or knows where to find this information, I'm really curious if anyone is really averaging even 100% of their MTT buyins over the long haul. It seems like even if making the $$ is easy, it takes a fair bit of luck to place 1st-3rd as well, and without doing that fairly often it seems like it'd be hard to get a great average.

After 8 $1.10s at UB (granted my first few I didn't really know what I was doing) I'm averaging $2.89 per, minus the buyin, so $1.79 profit. After 2 consecutive FTs, I'm sure I can't keep that up obviously.

Also, I don't know where to put this, but I absolutely LOVE the fact that all the buyins go to the prize fund for the $1 MTTs here. Also, the payout structure on the Fergusons (25% of players cash!) is really really sweet. But who can stay up late enough to play those? Can we have a tournament like that say at 1:30 PM each day in addition to 1:30 AM? I bet that would be HUGELY popular. Make it a $1.00 + $0.10 even, I bet it would fill every day. I like FTP a lot better than UB but I play there becuase they have so many more $1 MTTs and at much better times of day. Thanks guys.

Yea it's true. Chris like a challenge i guess, it's his experiment in bankroll management, maybe he wants to prove it can be done.
