| I'm thinking of trying out a razz ring game. What should I buy in for though? How many big bets? |

It's always good general rule to buy in with enough to cap every street. In the case of Razz and Stud games it's 16 BB's to cap every street. I like to buy in with 20 big bets into any limit game. It allows me to see a few streets and still have enough to cap every street I need to if I miss a couple times before I get that big hand.
So: 20 BBs is safe. |

Slick's advice is sound, but consider buying in for less bets as well. For me, I used to sit down with 25 bets but I found that because of my own "tilt capability" I'd have a hard time getting up before it was all spent if I was getting reamed by a good table. Moreover, I was reluctant to reload even if I felt I had a significant edge. Self-evaluation is an important part of play, and it usually takes me a while for me to even reach a decision point for where I stand. Hence, a psychological crutch that I like to use is buying in for ten bets. Razz is a game where only one type of hand wins, so capping each street is a very rare occurrence (basically you need two bicycle draws on 4th street to reach this level of "disagreement").
Adopting this slightly sub-optimal buy-in strategy, I found I'd reload without reservation if comfortable, and get up with only a small loss if I didn't. The sessions will then tend to be shorter but sweeter. |
