Should there even be pro's in Poker? Are pro's really that much better than any other studied player? Are they over rated?
I myself lean toward "yes", although I think they are all good players, they get a bit to much credit I think. Jamie Gold is a good example. So many bad plays he made... and so much luck he had. That's a pro??? Poker involves so much luck, that it overshadows skill. I used to play tournament level Checkers, a 100% skill game. There is clear cut pro's in that. It is always the same guys winning all the time. No one gets lucky, because there simply is no luck, unless you consider your oponnent making a mistake luck.
Anyway... post away... it's my opinion, so flame away, I don't care. |

| a "pro" is just someone who earns their income as a poker player. There are other people who are just as good as the "pros" but dont play as thier source of income.. more of a second income |

If winning the WSOP doesn't make you pro, then I don't know what does. |

Winning one tournament doesn't make you a pro. Earning your living playing poker is what makes you a pro. Jaimie won the lottery. |

This could be quite a complex topic. First, how are you defining "pro". Do you mean a big name pro like any of the FTP pros, or do you mean the unnamed pros who grind out a living day in and day out?
I assume you mean the big name pros and in that case it's about money. It has nothing to do with being "over-rated", etc. Having name pros largely contributes to the poker boom. You get some big television networks in the game broadcasting poker, a game that just about anyone can play and understand (unlike professional sports), add in some interesting and charismatic folks (the "pros"), throw down some serious prize pools, and you have a poker boom which means money for many people.
The name pros are good players. They are well-studied and experienced at the game from the mathematical, psychological and emotional aspects of it. Now that there are so many people involved, winning is more difficult and it is also shared by many newcomers. Although there is a luck factor in the large MTT fields and in the short-term, skill and experience can mean profit in the long run. |

Winning a tournament doesn't make you a "pro". Let me search far, oh a whole 2 posts up and find the answer...

| The day before the main event, Jaimie Gold was a TV producer. The day after he was retired. At no point is he a professional poker player. |

I think im backing up prolifik here im not quite sure but anyway, just a quote
Do you play poker for a living?
No, I'm a TV producer. I used to represent celebrities. I used to be a manager for Donnie Wahlburg and Brandi, but I quit to produce TV shows.

If you beat all the "Pro's" that compete in the WSOP, I'd say you are now a PRO also. You can now compete in the Proffesional Poker Tour, which is Pro-only. So that means you are Pro. Plain and simple.
I think deep down, Pro's are cheering thier luck that they can skate through the rest of thier lives being "Pro" after getting lucky and winning the WSOP. That's my opinion. I know no other sport or game where a pro can be beat so easy and often.
I just think they are over-rated. Some have real knowledge of the game... I've read the Harrington on Hold em' books... he is one that I could call "Pro"... but some of these others... I don't know...whatever...

Here's the last 2 parts of that too...

"Professional" is just a word. Being a professional poker player is not the same thing as being a successful poker player.
Bottom line: You don't need to be a professional to be a poker champion.

I think Rafe closes this case right there. 8)

ok iron lee.. y did u ask ur question then if you dont care about any of our responses. The pros also invited him to thier high stakes games as well because he is easy money for them. Doyle was even gonna stake him some more when he went bust because they all wanted his easy money.
He is no pro. plain and simple... That was not his source of income.. one week doesnt make him a pro. get it through ur skull. |

To be fair, let's assume that Jaimie Gold is a pro... To answer your question, based on what was televised of him during the WSOP, most people would agree that he sucks. Therefore, I find that he is not overrated. |
