I don't see any way I could have played this different. Is it just one of those times to go broke?

This is a tough situation, but there are a few flaws in it that I think you should keep it mind.
1. I love this hand PF, I will raise it indiscriminately. However, you raised too much. This is not a hand to isolate. Now granted everyone called anyway, and you may have had that read on the table, but I generally don't like to raise it more than 3x, even with limpers. It also makes it easier to get way from after the flop if thing don't go well (is a HUGE drawing hand, but it's still drawing).
2. Terrible bet on the flop. I understand you are representing a set of aces here, but THEY sure as hell don't understand that. I've seen a few of these satellite events and the play in them is absolutely atrocious. You've got the three stooges acting behind you and a lot of players will call any pair PF, playing as they would in HE. Top two is just too vulnerable to play like that. Some moron will call their low draw, and more than likely there is a flush draw out there. Get just one of them to call, and the rest will call automatically. I'd check here and see how the betting goes, I might be inclined to draw for the low, but in all likely hood, the set of 8's pots, and I'd say you should fold your nut low draw. It's far too early to put your life on the line for a draw at MAYBE half the pot. You are a better player than probably everyone else at the table, let a few of the maniacs take each other out, and then step in and rock the table.
3. Got counterfitted on the low, sucks a lot, but this is why when you are putting the majority of your chips on the line for a low draw you need to have a redraw.
In short, you took a great hand PF, and fell in love with it when you hit a maringal flop. If the stacks were deeper, or the pot smaller, you might be able to play with this a little. In fact, mistake number one, directly led to mistake number two here. |
