| Just wondering about any effect a political change may have on one of our favorite personal freedoms. Can the legislation be ammended in some way to allow U.S. residents to enjoy the same freedoms as other countries? This was a political sucker-punch that has really angered a lot of American citizens. I just thought I would bring this side of the subject up as I thus far have not read anything about it. Maybe I have overlooked a thread, if so apologies. |

The legislation CAN be amended, but it will take some time as it needs to gather enough support to do so. Online poker will benefit from a Democratic President/Congress because it seems that the GOP has become far too concerned with imposing their moral values/religious beliefs upon all citizens. The Democrats don't take it to the extreme like the GOP has, and they will probably be more helpful getting this legislation amended. |

| I honestly believe that they pushed this bill through to gain votes and campaign contributions. How does someone say gambling is bad, then take money from Harrah’s and horseracing, tobacco and alcohol associations? |

It is hard to say. I think if we had another unified gov't (democratic house, senate, and white house) things would likely not get any better. You might get to play but dems would want to tax your gross winnings at 50% (they tax sin rather than ban it). But, of course, we all know that gross winnings can easily be twice net winnings...heck gross winnings could be 20 times net winnings, so poker could actually be legal, but too expensive to play.
The best bet is some sort of split.
Libertarian wing republicans are likely to be comfortable with a poker carve out--unfortunately the republicans are currently controled by the religious right. |

Clearly it was an election year ploy to show the religious right voters that the republicans hadn't forgotten them. The polls are showing a serious threat to republican majorities in the house and senate and the republicans are looking for gimicks to get their loyal voters to the voting booths in two weeks.
The religous right was feeling ignored...abortion is still legal, there is no teacher lead prayer in school, evolution is still being taught in science classes. Republican control was giving them nothing and they were very likely to stay home. Without the religious right republicans will lose a bunch of seats. They needed to throw them a bone. |

You might as well ask if Democratic control of the government would lead to marijuana legalization. Don't count on it, even if it is the type of thing they're "supposed" to support. Politics and the need to get re-elected seem to be rather corrupting influences on both parties. |

I had to stop going to church for a few years until I figured out why I felt the same way.
A lot of those religious people you're bugged by... probably couldn't care less about Christianity and Jesus, but are just using the religion as an excuse to fulfill their desires to control other people. (Homosexuality is a sin, premarital sex is a sin, alcohol is evil, etc etc.) Despite the fact that the focus of the Bible is not sex or drugs or gambling, it's the "religious" folks who get their shirts in a knot over those issues. Maybe it's because they don't care about the focus of their religion, but just enjoy using it as a justification for social control and (frankly) a bigotted attitude that hates those who don't act the same way as them.
And I still don't go to church, for what it's worth - not that it changes my faith any. How am I going to commune with God surrounded by people like that?  |

| I remember the last presidential election when exit polls had Kerry as an overwhelming leader. Some tv networks were predicting him the winner. But, you saw the outcome. Take what you hear from polls with a grain of salt. Most are biased and used to sway and manipulate you. |

tell that to the folks that live in washington state it has a dem gov and is an very blue state. Washington was however the first state to outlaw internet gambling. |

I'm really hesistant to bring this up here but I belive the biggest dispaity between the polls and the outcome were in areas with the new electronic voting machines. Certainly something I think people should look at closely this time. |
