| My party poker account and my pokerstars account were hacked. The way it happened was i had my passwords saved, and had a great amount of spyware (pop-ups). Anyhow it does happen the spyware sends out the saved passwords and people log on and and take something if there is anything in there. If you have your passwords saved and have spyware than i would say that is what happened. |
Scooby posted this back on the first page of the thread, and I wanted to comment on it.
This is probably the number 1 way that people get their accounts hacked. There are several simple things everyone can do to prevent this:
1. Don't use the "Save My Password" feature on your computer. To the people who write malicious spyware and viruses, this is a free pass into your accounts.
2. Run periodic checks of your computer with an anti-spyware tool. Use one that's not a part of your regular anti-virus software. You should run a spyware scan after about every 20 hours or so of online time, after visiting sites that are spyware prone (particularly porn sites, hacker / warez sites, and sites that offer free illegal downloads), and any time you notice connection lags or a general slowdown of your computer. Two such programs that I highly recommend are: Spybot Search & Destroy ( http://www.safer-networking.org/ ) and Ad-Aware ( http://www.lavasoft.de/ ) Both are free, and will find and remove spyware that your antivirus software misses. (They found over 200 spyware programs on my system the first time I ran them, and I NEVER surf without antivirus software running!)
3. Never go online without adequate antivirus software running. If you don't have the money for Norton or McAffee's annual subscription, you can download AVG Anti-Virus for free at http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
4. Don't use simple, one-word passwords. The most-used passwords are God , sex, love, money, things like that. Passwords are case-sensitive, so try to use a password that has both upper and lower case letters, is at least 6 characters long and contains at least one number. And don't use any family names or dates as a password..... these are too easily looked-up by a clever hacker.
5. Don't use the same password for all your online accounts! This is a recipe for disaster. By doing this, you make yourself even more vulnerable. If one of the institutions you do business with online gets hacked, the first thing the hackers are going to do is try to find other accounts they can access with the same password. Don't make their jobs any easier for them.
6. Last, but not least..... if you aren't receiving answers from FTP's support team, check your anti-spam software. Every time I have ever e-mailed FTP's customer service, I have received a response within an hour or two. Make sure the support email address is included in your "Allowed" list, or their responses will get dumped with the rest of your junk mail. |

| Just in case you haven't checked, you might want to look in your bulk mail for whatever site your email account is at. I get email from FTP and that's where it goes to rather than my inbox. |

Jets, that is the message that you are agreeing with. You agreeing with that is beyond ironic, it's infuriating! You put up a whole post about ageeing with a post about not putting up worthless posts! AARGH! |
