And play money is just absolutely retarded. I was playing last night and I think 7 out of the 9 players went all in and after 24 suited popped up I just stopped paying attention.
I'm curious, I'm not really ready to go in on real money games yet but I want some more real experience. Is the best way to do this just deposit some money and play the smallest tables I can find or what? |

| Well play money is better than nothing, and read some books as well. |

I was in the same boat as your for a while. I still think play chips teach bad habits and of little educational help, but in saying that I found the best ways to get some slightly more serious games at play money:
1. At the low limits only get into a pot with a serious hand and then clean up all those easy chips.
2. Move up to the highest level you can at plays chips - it's still play, but if you are sitting down with people who have 10s of K in play chips, they at least know how the game works.
3. I found the best competition was from getting into a 90 seat sit n go (at the highest buy-in your play chips can afford) and just play super tight until the field gets down below 40. From there on people play better poker, even proper poker sometimes.
4. Don't be too scared of the buy-in if you can afford it. After donking around with play chips for a while finally deposited last week and went down at first (play chips habits), but stopped and reapproched it then in my first week of real money I doubled my deposit. Just play cautiously and if you lose your buy-in take a break, go back to play chips, read, think before sitting down with real dough again. Don't play above your BANK ROLL! Everyone says this, but that's because it is SOooo important.
5. The $1 sit'n'goes, although still crazy-loose, are good way to spin out a deposit for maximum experience. This is also how I doubled my buy in. - much like my suggestion for the playdough tournies, just play tight ABC poker untill the 25%+ of the field has been knocked out. |

| You'll definitely find a better game in real money over play money even at the nickle/dime level. If you can afford to I'd at least put in the minimum $50 and stay up with the forum and read some books. Good luck. |
