At the risk of being an A$$ I think you did the right thing to report this. This kind of thing makes the table almost unplayable. I am a strong believer that if you want/have to leave a tournament, have 1 shot at an all-in (without calling out your cards) and if you double/no callers then check the sit out box and be blinded out while you are absent. It's the only fair way to do it.
ADDED: The "it's only $1" notion is besides the point really. If someone gets away with illegal moves at low limits, they will carry on to try it at higher limits. And for some people that $1 could be the last of their deposit.

Going all-in every hand and hoping for a few doubleups is a reasonable strategy if one has to leave as it gives you your best shot at making the money while being blinded off. What this guy did is not just unethical but illegal. Unfortunately, you see this sort of thing all the time. There's an unspoken but widely followed fallacy among Internet players that one must lose (dump off) all one's chips if one has to leave while a tournament is still in progress. Total BS. Just sit out and be blinded off or try the all-in method, but obviously without announcing your cards and trying to dump off all your chips.

Is it wrong to say what you have? Even if your trying to be deseptive?
Because I have said what I had before, only to get more people in the pot. |

You can say anything about your hand as long as you don't tell the truth. Kinda weird, but that's the way it is. If he wants to go all-in, that is a decision he is allowed to make. Calling out his hand, however, is against the rules, and he needs to be reported. If he has to go, he can just leave and get blinded out.

I thought announcing your cards was improper but not against any actual written rule. The announcers kept complaining about Jamie Gold announcing his hands at the ME but he never got into any trouble for doing it.

Once again its just poor ettiquette cause the suck outs happen. He should just have clicked sit out and kept the fighting over the blinds the risk players will take as opposed to risking a stack.

I personally don't think you should have reported him. He's just trying to leave. I don't find it a big deal.
