| From the stand point of someone currently going through law school and playing poker, I think the most viable option for poker is to establish legally that it is a game of skill and not chance. This is what backgammon players have done, now its pokers turn. That will allow all players, pros and fish alike to play without constantly worrying about the loop holes closing up. I think the reason this ban became so popular with both parties in congress was for every 5 casual poker players there was a guy out there dumping his mortgage payment on party pokers "party casino", blackjack, or sports betting. |

| Whoa... Backgammon is a game of skill? Now, I don't know that much about it, but I've played it a few times... How can a game that requires the roll of dice considered skill when poker is not? Someone really has to get on this... |

I'd be interested in knowing how far backgammon players took their legal arguments (state courts, federal district, etc). The further the better.
I agree that like poker, backgammon is a game of skill and someone needs to get on that. I paid membership to the PPA hoping that they would co-sponsor such legal challenges. If backgammon has been ruled a game of skill in the federal courts, I think poker has a very good chance. California state courts have ruled that poker is a game of skill, but I'm not aware if there have been similar findings anywhere else.
If the PPA and others are trying to lobby for a poker carve out before hitting the courts I'm okay with that. The court battle will take a long time and congress certainly isn't going to want to appear to cave to the threat of legal action.
Figure out which of your congressional candidates is most likely to view a poker exception favorably and then campaign for them. Don't just vote for them, get everyone you know to vote for them. |
