|
|
I had a hand a few weeks ago which I believe is the best possible Stud/8 hand that you can get. It was the nut low wheel, combined with the highest possible high hand compatible with a wheel, a 7-high straight flush. I made the straight flush on 6th street, and an Ace on 7th street gave me the wheel.
The odds of getting this hand are about 1 in 2.1 million, making it over 3 times as rare as a Royal Flush.
The funny thing about Stud/8 though, is that you could still theoretically lose money on a hand like this (get quartered) in a multi-way pot.
Fortunately, I scooped the pot. Unfortunately, it happened at a 0.25-0.50 table, so it didn't make me rich. |

Any 3 suited wheel cards, one being an ace.
Low cards in general are good in low limit S8B, because so many people mistakingly play high hands. But to make any real profit you need to scoop.
Play Poker Like the Pros has a good beginners S8B section. |

| This is a kind of intersting point. I suppose there is no absolute nut/nut hand. Since having the nut high and a possible low is impossible to have together. I suppose that you have it correct that the best hand would be A?, 2? 3s, 4s, 5s, 6s, 7s. |

Best possible stud hi low hand
AAA or any rolled up cards
After that in my opinion 345, but many will say A23 suited. 345 has many more ways to go for a straight. A23 can only give you one way for a straight. While the A will help if you hit it, I wouldnt want to hang my life on A's for high. |

I think you're missing the point of hi/lo games. The objective is to scoop the pot, have the best possible high and low hand. Sure AAA or any set is a good start for the hi, but it's a disaster for the low as 2 of your cards are bricks. If your set is 999 or higher you can't even get a low hand.
BNS has it right, the best starting hand is an ace and 2 wheel cards all of the same suit. |

| Its funny how jbrennen posted the best possible stud8 hand AFTER all the cards are out, and people are arguing over the best starting hands. J, I think you are correct that you ended with the best possible hand. True, you could get quartered, most likely on the low side, but to lose money you would need to be against someone with a higher straight flush, so I think you're still in a pretty good spot. Also, it should be pretty obvious if someone has a chance at quartering you. |

The best possible 7 card hand is A2345 with a 7 high straight flush.
For the people arguing about starters. 345 suited is the best starter aside from AAA. |

I've had an A-5 SF once, unfortunately it was early in a Stars Tourney. Still nice to see.
