|
|
| Ok, so I have been playing Razz for a month or two now. I am really really starting to get the hang of this game, and it seems to come to me more naturally than any other poker game. I have played poker long enough to know that I have more to learn than I think I do. I know that there are more skilled players than me, and I intend to keep learning. But I do consider myself better than average. Anyway, my question is this.... Is there enough action in Full Tilt's Razz games to specialize in it and make a solid part time profit at say, the 1/2, 2/4, and 3/6 tables?? I am beating .25/.50, .50/1, 1/2 fairly regularly now, even though I know I still have much to study. Razz regulars, I would appreciate your replies. |

Yeah, it's possible, but it's not easy. You've got to be good enough to beat your opponents by a bigger percentage than the house rake, and at lower limits, the rake can be pretty big.
In terms of rake structure, the 3/6 tables are probably best -- out of the stakes you're talking about.
I'm down overall by perhaps $100-$200 over many months of Razz playing here, but in the absence of a rake, I'd probably be up $600-$800. (Probably more, because I'd play more without a rake...) But the $100-$200 loss is basically break-even, I've won or lost that much in a single night at 2/4.
That's the problem with the low stakes (but not microlimits; I'm talking 1-2, 2-4, 3-6) online games in general -- the rake percentage runs pretty high. I've been playing more 5-10 lately, due to the reduced importance of the rake, but not long enough to have any solid track record. |

| Thanks for the advice jbren thats definately something I'm going to need to take into consideration. I really hadn't thought about rake so much, but that is one of the things that drove me away from the Small Stakes Limit Holdem tables, so I definately know how hard rake can make things. |

| I think in order to make a profit you must bluff. You obviously have to pick your points, but most players feel it's all cards. A site that has some useful info is razzpokerstrategy.com. Some of the basic stuff, but also gives some examples of things that I hadn't really thought of before. |

Good reading there. I enjoyed the quote:

Just about all poker players will agree that the game of Razz can be taught to anyone.

I taught my 7-year-old daughter to play well enough that she was turning a "profit" at the play money tables in her first session.
They got one page wrong there, though, where they talk about the rank of hands, and how you could have trips vs. trips at showdown, or that quads is the worst Razz hand... Sounds okay, except that nobody ever goes to showdown with a best hand of trips or quads -- it's basically impossible. You'll always have a better Razz hand available than trips or quads. In actual practice, the only Razz hands that count are: high card, one pair, two pair, full house. |

Here's a 6th street bluff which worked out for me, in a situation where I had an awful hand that didn't look too bad on the board...

This is an example of betting your board vs. your opponent's board, rather than your own cards.
I don't think I played the hand particularly well -- I should have bet out on 4th and again on 5th. But it worked out okay, and I actually won more than I probably would have if I'd played it right -- I probably would have gotten a small bet called on 4th street and a fold on 5th street. |

@Pokit2s:
I think you might find that at the lower levels the SNG games are far easier to beat and profit from than the ring games. I can alost guarantee a cash finish in SNGs.

| The other day i played a 5.50 tournament with 148 people and ended up winning. Razz is my favorite game because you find SO MANY DONKEYS it is crazy. Although i did get called down by a guy with AAJ showing and lost some chips because sometimes they just catch better cards. I did take 4 rough beats in the tourny but luckaly I had 10000 and only lost 1500 to 2000 each hand. I did lose with the better first 5 cards every hand in that small stretch. Razz is great when you know how to pick your spots so i reccamend every Razz tourny possible because it is a very juicy game and the good players will do very good nearly every single time. If you are naturally aggressive you will do much better than tight players. My 2 cents |

| I like to play razz every time I get on. It is the first thing I look to play because the games are so juicy. Sometimes it sucks to get cold decked which can happen for an entire tourny sometimes. I am up 300 in 10 days. |
