The Senate must first vote on it, and then it will become official if they pass it too.
(If you play for money online this bill might affect you indirectly. You will lose a lot of profitable American fish) |

Yes Steve, you will be affected.
Do you think FTP will remain open for business if the US gov't bans online poker and gambling? Probably not. Most of thier customers, and virtually all of the pros live in the US.
The ban will not stop me from playing online poker, but it will decrease the amount of fun I have doing it. I've played many sites, including a few European sites, and most of them suck.
I joined the PPA even though I'm Canadian. Most everything that happens in the US effects us. |

The bill doesn't actually prohibit online gambling, nor does it make it a criminal offence for somebody to gamble online. It's more about preventing financial transactions to and from online gambling sites, and preventing links to online gambling sites.
The bill is basically a complete joke. It has so many carve-outs for things like horse racing and state lotteries that it effectively contradicts itself. Playing the lottery is okay, but playing a game with a large skill element like poker isn't?
Whats more, it is unlikely to pass the senate anyway (similar bills have been defeated numerous times in the past) and if it doesn't do so soon, they'll have to go back to the beginning and start all over again.
Nevertheless you should take this bill seriously, whether you live in the US or not. The puritan minority in the US, with their twisted sense of morality, has a significant voice - as you can see simply by watching American TV. There is a chance, however small, that the bill will pass, and that will have a substantial effect on the poker industry.
The bigger sites will find a way around the law - Full Tilt, PokerStars, PartyGaming etc. are simply too big to be destroyed by this. But the smaller sites will definitely suffer, and the player pool will dwindle as people find it more and more difficult to deposit online.
There's a couple of great articles about this by Allyn Jaffrey Shulman on the CardPlayer website:

Online Poker is already illegal in the US as far as running the sites.
It's also illegal just to play real money in many states with Washington being the worst (felony).
The pros that run this site are like the emperor with no clothes they are cut off from reality by the hanger-oners that kiss their butts and tell them whatever they want to hear. They have gotten too big for their britches and when Howard went on National TV on CNN and told the US Govt that they might as well make it legal because he was just going to go off shore and do it anyway that in my opinion was a fatal mistake.
When the profits were smaller the govt looked the other way.
Now that it has blown up they can no longer fudge around it they have to either make it legal or enforce the laws against it.
It is very hard to change basic law in the US to allow gambling on a national level and that coupled with the big egos and heads buried in the sand will make it an easy fight for those that oppose it.
I think it was greed that made online poker explode and it is that same greed and large egos and small minds that have now opened the door that cannot be closed.
I could single handedly fight and win this battle but have nothing to gain by doing so. I personally feel that online poker has been turned into 3 card monte by the greedy gambling junkies that are more concerned with getting their french quarter high fix then making poker a legitamit game.
They have been taken as high as the wave goes and we all know that what goes up must come down and this wave is going to come crashing down very very hard.
I am sure they will be saying "oh it's just a rumor" while sitting in their jail cell lol and i just got an email from pokerchamps saying that all US accounts have been frozen so many sites are already closed to US.
I'm sure that the CEO of BetOnSports who is in jail now is finally realizing that it is for real.
Everyone always gets pissed at me when I speak out but if you do not face whats happening then you are an idiot that is doomed to fail. |

Not sure how much truth there is to this article, but apparently there seems to be a lack of support for the bill in the senate and is running into opposition from lobbyists and some Senators have put a hold on the bill.
Here's the article:

LMAO that was a joke.
bottom line the idiot is the person that lives in Washington signs up for this site and does hard time as a convicted felon for playing 50 cents worth of penny ante poker.
these guys are shooting off their moths on national tv CNN daring the govt to make it legal OR ELSE and i say that was a stupid move!
and someone should let them know...
Howard that was a stupid move.

Don't you understand, the internet...is like, it's like a series of tubes. Having to send poker cards through them slows down precious email. 8)
Like many people have said it sounds like the bill will not pass, but they might crack down on internet gambling under the current laws. I didn't know a site was closed it's US accounts becuase of it though, does anyone have any more info on it, and what is the likelyhood of the same fate for full tilt? |

Wouldn't this just stop people from putting money online using credit cards? What about Neteller? I don't use a credit card for that...=
I don't understand how this should affect poker at all. The U.S. Gov't already acknowledged poker as a source of income, a game of skill. There was a court case in I think 1989 maybe? I don't see why a gambling act should even affect poker if poker isn't necessarily gambling. In my pov, poker isn't gambling, it's more skill than luck. Just my 2 cents.
Peace! |

| poker is still gambling, you are betting money on your cards, the matter of luck or skill has nothing to do with it being gambling. i dont think its gonna pass through the senate though. |
