Basically, it's 7-card stud, but instead you use your 5 lowest cards. A2345 is the best hand. A2346 is better than A2356, and 34567 is better than A2348. Straights and flushes don't count against you. Aces are low.

Basically, you want to start with 3 cards 7 and under.

Actually, go buy Phil Hellmuth's book, 'Play Poker Like the Pros'. It's a great book for beginners. It teaches all the games, and makes it easy for readers to understand. And it's only like $15 on amazon.ca.

so its 7card stud only no staights or flushes, aces are low and you want to make the lowest hand so the worst hand would be a AAAKK the best is A2345

just tell me if these are right

1.A4488<A2456 2.KK789>JJJJ6 3.TJQKA<A6834

That's right, though you'll rarely see those hands shown down at the end.

It's more like,

23457 > A3467

A4589 < A4568

A2456 < A2356

Also, if you're going to talk about Razz hands, it's probably easier if you arrange the five lowest unpaired cards in order from highest to lowest. Not only is this the preferred terminology, it makes it easier to determine the winner.

So for Sue's examples, you should probably think of them like this:

23457 > A3467: instead think 75432 > 7643A

A4589 < A4568: instead think 9854A < 8654A

A2456 < A2356: instead think 6542A < 6532A

Now it's easy to see: a seven-five low beats a seven-six low; a nine-low loses to an eight-low; and a six-five-four low loses to a six-five-three low.

[qiote]2.KK789>JJJJ6[/quote]

Just commentary here: I don't think 4-of-a-kind is possible in Razz.

Even JJJJ666 turns into a small full house, 666JJ. And if you don't fold that hand before finding out you're stuck with a full house, you might try another game. Smile

Just a note -- the worst possible Razz hand is QQQKK (Queens full of Kings), which can only be achieved by having a 7-card hand consisting only of Kings and Queens.

There is no 7 card hand that would resolve to a four-of-a-kind -- basically, you'd always be better off swapping the fourth card of the quads for any other card in your hand.

So as was already said, JJJJ6 would never "play".

And AAAKK is not the worst hand, although it's pretty bad. Aces always play low, including in pairs or triplets.

Sometimes you'll hear a Razz player talking about how he made a boat on the river -- a bad thing -- but he's (probably) not talking about having to play a full house as his low hand. He's alluding to the fact that if you make a full house within your 7-card hand, your best Razz hand will be no better than a pair, which of course loses to even KQJT9.
