Okay, kids, for all of you who don't beleive the Internet gambling ban that's headed for the US Senate is having any effect... get this. I accepted an upgrade from PokerChamps.com this week. Didn't think much of it - until I went to log in and found myself locked out. The message, "Login Failed/Account Not Active" appeared. BTW, I have winnings from Free Rolls in that account.

I emailed a poker buddy to see what the deal was and she had already contacted Support. Guess what? the 'new platform' includes 'geo-location software' enabling a PokerChamps policy 'not permitting access to individuals in the United States.' In a subseguent email they stated this was due to 'law changes which we must abide by.'

Now, that is total BS. It is not law yet, but the fact is, action was taken - premature or not. A final email said if accounts were previously linked to NETELLER, monies could be transfered. I do have a NETELLER account but that ain't where the money came from. I won it all. I'll be contacting Support to see if I can get that money out as soon as I finish here.

So much for "It ain't gonna happen." It just did.

I've written to Mike Bolcerek, head of the Poker Players Alliance (a .org) to see if he can find out why this premature action was taken - and why it was done without notice. BTW, the site is based in Malta. !

I'm interested to see if FullTilt will give us some input on their policy. My biggest bank roll is here. I'm gonna be so POed if my poker is taken away.

Write your Senators!

The thing about it is that unless an online poker site is going completely out of business (fly-by-night), it's unlikely they will visibly steal from anyone. Even when it's a country as world-beloved as the US, everyone else would probably pull their money out asap.

I guess Gus Hanson (owns/runs PokerChamps), who lives in the US, didn't want to get arrested. Right now, they're just arresting people for tax evasion or illegal transport of gambling equipment, but once this new law hits, then the online poker site owners/operators that live in or visit the US may have something to fear.

pokerchamps blows anyway (sorry if you lost money). i heard Gus owes money to so many other pros, he's probably pulling a dutch boyd. If anyone is worried, put most of your BR in neteller and just put buy-ins into the site when you are going to play.

Then start worrying about NetTeller. Smile

I was actually posting to ask what Dutch Boyd did. What did Dutch Boyd do?

I did consider that. Malta law is the only law they are obligated to follow, so when they mention a "new law", you might think they were talking about Malta. But, why would Malta create a law that also blocked Japan and China? (Or, what law might Malta have created for another purpose, that would also precent the poker site from serving the US, China, and Japan?) On the other hand, if it was indeed fear of the upcoming US law, why would PokerChamps block China and Japan as well?

Maybe I just haven't yet found the article that clarifies this, and maybe it was purposefully ambiguous. Anyone have a related article or link?

Technically it might be Malta law that applies, but the US is so powerful, it wouldn't be much of a problem for them to apply pressure behind the scenes - and if they're serious about making the bill work, they'd have to as none of the poker sites are based in the US anyway.

It's standard neocon idiocy. I can't see it working. I'm in the UK, so I can't test it, but has anyone tried using an overseas proxy to connect?

The thing with PokerChamps confuses me. It's still legal to play online poker in the US, so why block more than half you customers from playing on your site? Why not take a wait and see approach?

Do they know something about this internet gambling ban that we don't?

PKR also has taken action of a sort - its real money release is limited to players outside the US. Of course, that's not nearly as bad as simply denying players money they already have in their accounts.
