Please all new players take this advice. Dont think that reading books makes u a good poker player. Books give some good advice but not as much as u can learn from playing money games and following ur gut. I have been playin money games with friends for 5 yrs now and im only 18. So im pretty experienced and I am pretty dominent at the poker tables and I love newbies who walk in with their knowledge from a book and think they can beat me. Every man and his dog has a book and they all say the same thing so dont waste ur money. Please just play to learn and use experience to ur advantage.

If anyone wants some tips on how to play better dont be afraid to ask.
And if anyone wants to try and say books are good please post and if u want to agree with me and bad mouth them please post I like all comments they are funny hahaha

hahah sorry that I use so called "keyboard speak" but noobs is all I can call them because donks is retarded and I cant swear on here. Also Im 18 so I use shortened words and ****. Also I am becoming a computer and software engineer so get ready cuz I am the future hahaha

I think the thing with books is that a lot of people seem to either overestimate them or underestimate them. Books can be great for your game, either as a way to minimize your losses as a beginner or to maximize your winnings by introducing some new concepts once you've played a bit longer. They won't do the actual work for you though, you still have to understand how and why these concepts work to apply them properly in as many situations as possible. I've only been playing for real money for less than a year, and I know that reading about poker has helped me tremendously. Books can't just change the way you play, but make you consider other factors when thinking about the game as well, which is a lot more important in my opinion.

Thanks Riddim u have backed up my point Im not sayin books are all bad and dont read them Im just saying that you should play ur own game and noobs that think they are good because they read books are what I hate. Books may have helped u riddim but talkin to an experienced player would prolly help more if u wanna kno anything just ask.

PS Stevn I am the best player in the world and Im only 18 so shove it hahaha

Dude, you're making all teenagers look bad. First of all, 5 years isn't much experience - there are people on these forums that have played for over 20 years. Secondly, what do you have against bad players? They're where you make your money - don't complain!

Good players do not condescend poor players. It encourages them to play better and that is less profitable.

If you want to see a real donkey, just check in the mirror. I am sure you have a mean 25�/50� game but perhaps you should read a book and figure out why such an experienced player is still playing in play money games.

dumwaldo, that's great man. Can't wait to see the results of that. I do agree with the OP to an extent on the newer plays living by the books but I also don't mind because they are VERY predictable. 5 yrs of experience isn't really that much to brag about. I'm only 21 and have 15 yrs experience playing poker, started with draw, then stud, then hold'em. 11 years of which I've been playing for money. Instead of coming on a forum where there are probably better and more experienced players and talking crap, try to learn something...unless of course your already perfect, which even Phil Ivey says he makes mistakes EVERY session he plays.

I actually just applied something I learned listening to Phil Gordon's audio Little Green Book. I limped utg with AA and didn't get the raise I was hoping for. I flopped an A, rainbow flop, no straight draws. Checked. The turn paired the board, but also brang a second diamond. First to act bets the min, which looked to me like he had a flush draw. Prior to reading Phil's book I would have just called, hoping he hits his flush. But this time I raised, but still gave him good odds to call, which he did. He caught his flush, and doubled me up.

It sounds like a meaningless little play, but without the raise on the turn the pot would have been smaller, so his raise on the river would have been smaller, and my all-in reraise would have been smaller. With the bigger pot I had to reraise all-in. Also, if he didn't hit his diamond on the river at least I have the extra money I raised him on the turn.

Prior to reading Phil's book I was missing opportunities to win more chips.

Well I did it and its funny i gave away 10 cents to make me have 40 bucks total and i did it in like 2 hours it was fun but now u can call me i dunno a god, the phenom, the prodigy and u can have all my smack talk u want cuz its free go figure. It was fun makin me look good and provin u wrong the pic is in the next post I had to resize it it was huuuuuggggeee
