$20 is far too little no matter what you're playing on FTP, so it'd be more surprising if you didn't go broke. With a BR that small you shouldn't even have $15 at the table to lose.

I have a friend that I play poker with every friday night. I gave him $20 two weeks ago so he could try online poker. He plays nothing but $1.25 sit and go's. During the week he plays at least 3 SNG's per day and on the weekends he plays at least 5 a day.

He is up to $35.

Dustin, sorry to hear you almost busted out but it sounds like you have enough for a $1.25 SNG so maybe you can turn your $2 into something.

I'm not saying it's impossible to build a bankroll from $20 on FTP, just that the probability of going broke is pretty high.

JMHO, but I think a player has a better shot at building something from a small bankroll rather than having a bankroll that can support many mistakes.

I am far from rich but I would say my available funds for 'toys and playing' is above average. When I started playing online poker I made $100 deposit after $100 to the tune of a few grand over the first month or two. I learned from my mistakes but I did make a lot of mistakes and just about every time it cost me a nice amount of money.

I got frustrated with dumping money into every poker site I could find and limited my 'allowance' for online poker to the point that there were many days i could not play because I had nothing in the 'allowance'. That is how I learned some bankroll managment and finally got myself to where I belonged, on micro-limit tables.

I learned how to grind away on 10¢ tables for hours just to churn out a $6 profit. I learned the paitence to wait out the premium hands and the discipline to read the board well and bet accordingly. Most importantly, I learned how to value every penny I had on the table.

I used to pay every draw that came across the table but the lessons I learned on those micro tables taught me how to bet better. If I were playing the hand that busted Dustin, I honestly think I would have been able to get away from it and salvage $10. I want to see all the cards before I commit all my money and I have learned how potentially disasterous board pairs can be.

These are some of the things I try to keep in mind when I am playing...

A bad lay down will ALWAYS cost less than a bad beat.

Getting your money in the middle every time you think you have the best hand will cost money in the long run.

You MUST put your opponent on a hand and consider their possible outs.

I did not learned those things when I was playing with a generous bankroll Only when I put myself on a shoestring budget did this all become apparent to me. Having the option to re-laod because I was playing with a small enough piece of my bakroll hurt my game and hindered my ability to learn. When I limited myself to the options of playing better or not being able to play I learned a whole lot more.

I am not trying to say I am a professional level player now, but I am back on the 1/2 tables and churning out a consistant profit these days. I can't remember the last time I had to make a deposit and my account status is over a grand. I take beats like everybody else but I manage to control my betting and calling well enough that my losses are smaller than my wins.

An ironic twist to my personal plight is that there was a single outside influence that made a dramatic difference in my educational process. One of the sites i dumped a few hundred into when i was learning was doyles room. Since i spent so much on the site they sent me a free copy of Super System 2. I have never read the book from cover to cover but everything between the covers has been read.

It was this book that taught me better stratagies and better judgement. It was this book that piqued my interest in other poker games besides holdem. It was this book that turned my poker game around.

And somehow this thread has now come full circle back to the subject of books. Wink

peace,
dumwaldo

BTW
Dustin, its your last $20 from me. However, this time it does not come with wishes of good luck. This time it comes with wishes of good judgement.

And one other thing, it won't make you less of a man if you do read a book.

Ya Im gonna shoot this damn site the 16 straight wins was a crazy night but today Im back down to 20 bucks because of this site and people who go all in on crap. This low stack was raisin crazy and showin lotta bluffs I get J A suited he goes all in I call he has 4 6 offsuit he hits the 3 5 7 for the straight I hit nothin like cmon full tilt gimme a break. Ive been gettin my money in with good hands and losin then I get mad and lose money or get really tired at 3 am and lose money so I will try my hardest to keep this 20 bucks goin but I dont have much confidence in this site and online poker in general. Live is much much better and Is way more fun to play. Maybe if I had a bankroll to waste like some people on here I could play crazy but I dont so donations are still welcome.

If I lose my money to one more ridiculous 95% to 5% bad beat again Im leavin this site.

A-J vs 6-4 isn't much of a bad beat. You'll lose that hand about 34% of the time.

well dustin, it doesn't help that you will chase a gutshot and/or a flush draw to the river, regardless of a bet. also the thing about you feeling it made my day the other night. also you can't really berate other players, when your play is not all the spectacular either. basically you're the pot calling the kettle black.

I know my play isnt that great but in live play I play totally different because I play tourny style mostly but online chasing is sometimes great because the potential for a cash game all in which I did and it helped. But I realize not to chase for big bets now and I chase flushes not gut shots open ended maybe. Hopefully Ill get back up or u kno just go play live so I can dominate and win. I found that the heads up sit and goes are fun unless someone comes and just goes all in all the time because unlike a cash table I cant leave bahh. Whatevs ill keep playin my game and see how she goes. Still accepting donations and they are always appreciated thnx.
