Bring back the draft?
40-some years ago, overweight, and otherwise out-of-shape draftees were in better shape after 8 weeks BCT and even better shape after AIT if their MOS required it. They had no choice.
Run-in with the law? LOL ... My BCT company in '66 was mostly from NYC and Chicago and many were there as an alternative to jail. It worked. |
I hear ya. My first day of basic, my Chief told us we were going to be worked and run and put through the wash but by the end we would be in the best shape of our lives. And so we were.
Of course, I must say, this is in the mid 90's. We were issued a card, with a smily face on it. I asked "WTF is this for?" Turns out, the card is for when the recruits feel that the chief or whoever is pushing them too hard that they can pull that card ONCE and the chief had to back off. This was to prevent people from getting too "stressed" or what not.
I asked myself if this card would help me if an enemy soldier was about to waste me, if I pulled it out would he spare me. Of course it was laughable to me, but hey, things change I suppose.
I gather you were not issued the same card?
I still laugh about it and wonder if they still issue those cards. For the life of me they had a name for it but I can't remember now. |

Yeah, they do ...according to warrior daughter, who is now a really BIG sergeant. I don't remember the name for it either. We both laughed about it initially and agree that it's pretty silly ... that it's better to weed out those who can't cope with the artificial stress of BCT before they have to face that of the life-threatening variety. |

The PUBLIC school system in the US is on a downward spiral.
Before I read any further, the point is that it wasn't paid for as if it was some kind of private item.
The inner city schools especially are hit the hardest. There is never enough money, they aren't funded enough (since there isn't enough money).
It is getting off the point. Consider where the school is located, consider who is funding it and consider why it is being funded. All of those items are different according to locale. Again, the point is that the conservative agenda would NEVER be to treat this as a private item. It would sound unAmerican.
In tough times the schools take the hit first. Saying that the US public school system is some model of socialist utopia or success is laughable.
Depends how old you are. What school system from the 1950s through the 1970s was better globally? And where did the US rank as a nation?

The Highways are falling apart. Look at the recent bridge collapses. The highway funds are constantly diverted and rife with corruption, ineptitude and fraud.
So I take it that you are in favor of privatization of the roads?

The military you seem to claim is socialist.
Even juggs will tell you it is a socialist system. Do you want to privatize the military as well? Have at it. Is that what you want?

Your highways are still free. Your schools are still free to your delight. You are not paying as much as you would prefer for your military, nor your schools, nor your highways. Yet don't you gripe a lot about what you do have to pay?

Take what may have been true 50 years ago and put it into todays context. So funny. You thinking just like Kerry when he said if you grow up in the inner city and uneducated you end up in Iraq. Now, I am not saying that there are fools how signed up in the military for the sole purpose of getting a free ride education wise and such, there are those. Look at the shooter in Fort Hood recently. ROTC, took all the money to become a doctor and freaked the hell out when he found out he had orders to ship out. It happens.
Of course you sir have never served in the military. Oh you have some grandpa or what not who did something or another for the military oh so long ago and you think that gives you some insight on military matters. Your contempt towards the military shows through in spades.
When the Tsunamis hit Indonesia not long ago, it was the US Navy and the Australian Navy who were on the scene saving lives. People like you just watch from the TV and say "that's such a shame" and then go on finishing rolling up your joint and smoking away your brain. That's ok. No worries. People like me and Jugs, and Tracer and Hghlndr have taken to the wall and risked our lives so that you can sit around and dis on the troops all day long.
You sir would have no idea of what it means to serve something greater than yourself. To our benefit, to our sacrifices we have done this for whatever reasons. you sir would not have the courage to do such. You are a weak one, but this is ok as there are people stronger than yourself that will always make sure that you can get more free scraps.
But you shall pass from the Earth one day. And likely long before I will. What is sad is that after you pass, you will be forgotten. you have no line to remember you. You have no children who will pass on your knowledge (and pathologies). Your own wife will move on and marry a new American. You will turn to dust and be forgotten. If remembered at all, your life will be remembered as something of nothing worth while to speak of.
So it is that many will pass from the Earth. I will live on though. Through the thoughts and memories of my children, and their children. Alex will walk again in the name of a child in my line that shall be named after me. I will be remembered by my line for the things I have taught them, the things I have done for them. I truly will live forever. Because I chose to live for something other than just for myself.

Interesting developments on the House Health care reform bill.
Well, Pelosi promised to put the entire bill on the web so that you, the public could read it yourself 72 hours before any vote. She has broken that promise.
So, to find out what is in the bill it takes people in the know to leak it. Pelosi complains about "Lies" about the bill, if she posted the bill we could see for ourselves couldn't we?
One thing, nothing in the bill takes effect until 2012. Figuring this reform is so badly needed it is funny how it is pushed off enacting until after the 2012 elections. Hmmm. Very odd. I suppose there isn't that pressing of a need then if the Dems are willing to push it off for 2+ more years. We are told this bill is the greatest thing ever (even though Congress is exempt from having to participate in it). If it is so great then lets get this ball rolling and put in in effect at least half way into 2010? I would like to see how it works before the 2012 elections. Of course, we all have an idea of how it is going to work don't we? Thus the reason for putting it off until after the 2012 elections maybe?
For those of you who do not follow on this issue, let me be the one to break a few things to you. Then you can decide for yourself what to think.
The Ways and Means Committee has confirmed, comply with the bill or face fines and prison. Up to 5 years in prison and 250K in fines if you don't have a approved insurance plan. That is pretty harsh. Of course, the Government plan will be so cheap who wouldn't at least get that? Well, the cheapest Government plan is estimated to cost 15K a year. That is $288 a WEEK cost to you. And that is the cheapest plan. So be ready to pay up suckers, or go to jail.
Now, if that isn't bad enough it gets worse. Abortion. I was under the impression that abortion would not be covered under the Government plan. It is. Not only that, EVERYONE who signs up for a government plan must pay a monthly premium specifically to cover abortions. Now, you the individual will not be able to choose to have an abortion, that power is up to the Health and Human Services Secretary to decide.

Now, with the abortion issue, they (Government) can't tell you if you can or can't have one, they will decide if they will pay for it.
So, if you are one who is against abortion and you are on the Government plan, you are paying into the abortion fund with the extra monthly premium for that fund.
If you are one who wants and abortion, you may or may not be granted the money to pay for it, despite the fact that you paid into the fund for abortion.
I would assume that the bill will set out the criteria on how that particular decision is made, but then again it may be vague and arbitrary. You never know with this bunch <Pelosi, Reed>
The Hispanic Caucus, said they will not vote for any health reform bill that forces people to prove their citizenship to receive Government assistance. So, illegals will have to be covered as well if Pelosi wants the House bill passed.
The moderate dems are beginning to feel the pressure of this agenda being pushed by Pelosi and Obama.
John D Rockefeller, Democrat, said that doesn't think that his voters care much for this path. Overall this is tight for the House bill. Gonna be a lot of back door dealing and some may have to fall on their own swords so to speak if this passes.

Unemployment. It passes the 10% mark. Obama spinning it said less jobs were lost in October than in September. Of course he also previously had touted how his stimulus plan has saved and created jobs, yet unemployment rises. I don't think their math is very good, but as you all know, "math is idiotic".
We have been told that the Recession is over, economic conditions are improving, yet unemployment is rising. We are told that unemployment is the last thing to improve.
This is the thing, with the dollar in the shape it is in, employers are hesitant to hire new people. They don't know the increases they will be facing with the new health care bill among other things. The weak dollar is making business worry as well. As far as the economy growing, let us see how it stands when there is no more stimulus, cash for clunkers and such. This is the true test for the economy, can it stand on its own legs? We don't know. The market is still down 40% of its 2007 highs.
We are facing more economic hardships, people losing their jobs and the Government debates of a health care plan that increase the pressure on the economy. In the House bill there is a 2.5% added tax to everyone's income to pay for it. Despite what Pelosi tells you, that only rich people will pay higher taxes, this goes across the board. And if you don't pay it you go to jail. As unemployment rises, the price of stocks rises as well. This is companies trimming fat as it were.

Obama does not know how to create jobs. Hell, it is not the Presidents job to create jobs anyway. The actions of this administration are causing people to lose their jobs but helping the Wall street types. So much for main Street.
Not to mention, the real unemployment rate is around 17.5%, finally acknowledged by the media for the first time that i have seen-

For months now, Gibbs (Obama's Press Sec) said "You've heard me say for months that we believe that 10 percent was going to come."
Well, really? Ok, I also remember him saying that if the Stimulus bill got passed that unemployment would not rise above 8%.
They saying 10% was expected now, can I get a 12%? How about a 15%? **** numbnuts.
Well, you can be like Feihua, and put all your faith in Government, or, you can be one of the people who can get out ahead of this mess. Get out of debt, stay out of debt. Develop your own skills, help your kids develop their emerging talents. These people in Washington are not going to solve your problems. If people get themselves on solid ground it will be despite the road they are pushing the American people down. |
