|

I have not seen enough of what is available to even make a Top Ten list yet, but I believe I have seen much of what is up for consideration at this year's Oscar shebang.
Slumdog Millionaire
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Milk
Changeling
Frost/Nixon
Wall-E
Gran Torino
Tropic Thunder
....cough, cough.....
Valkyrie
Scanned but haven't started watching:
The Wrestler
Happy-Go-Lucky
Let The Right One In
Vicky Christina Barcelona
Not yet seen but aware of:
Synecdoche, New York
Doubt
The Reader
Rachel Getting Married
and would like to hear about others.
The one film that is definitely under the radar is Shotgun Stories
Best Flick is so far going to Slumdog Millionaire with ease.
I want to see Clint Eastwood get the Actor nod for Gran Torino. It isn't his best job, but he has said it is his last. Normally, I do not go for sentimentality, but I really enjoyed this flick, and he was more than fine to watch the whole time.
That said, if I have to be absolutely serious and disregard sentimentality, Mickey Rourke (and I really don't like him) is unbelievably great in The Wrestler........and I have only scanned the damn thing.
Anne Hathaway appears to be a shoe-in for Rachel Gets Married. Other contenders look to be Merryl Streep and this newcomer in Happy-Go-Lucky.
Best Supporting Actor nod in my boat goes to Robert Downey Jr. for Tropic Thunder. Odd film for an Oscar nom, and I don't care about Ben Stiller movies much, but Downey was incredible. His Jeffersons speech, his full retard speech, these are hard to get out of my head.
There is this new, young gal, in Gran Torino that is adorable. Don't know her name, don't wanna look it up. But she needs to get a Sup Actress nod for a nom. As does the gal that plays Brad Pitt's wanna be momma in Benjamin Button.
Best Director: so far........Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire.
In fact, all of those acting categories could be filled with the cast from Slumdog Millionaire.
Screenplays I have to wait on. The deal about screenplays is that the Woody Allen film (this year Vicky Christina Barcelona) always gets nominated, and deservedly.
To me, the screenplay is the best award because it is the most accurate about what should be the best film of the year for decades from now.
But I gotta see everything first to figure that one out.
Cinematography is a toss up between Benjamin Button, Changeling and Slumdog Millionaire. Changeling gets a extra point for technical genius.
Wall-E gets animated in a landslide. I am not gushing about it like a lot of folks proclaiming it as the best film of the year. I am not big on animated films. But I am lying if I say I did not have a good time.
I did see the latest rave out of Japan from Studio Ghibli that cranks out the current faves in Japanese animation. I gotta look up the name:
Gake no Ue no Ponyo
I don't know if it is even close to showing in the States. Enjoyable, along the lines of My Neighbor Tottoro but not as keep watching compelling as Wall-E.
Costumes?
Another one that I have to sit back and absorb some other flicks.
Any other ideas out there?
It has been a very good year, good season of movies............
I didn't even mention The Dark Knight and Iron Man............
and yeah, Heath Ledger will probably get Best Sup Act but I still like the Downey character a lot. |

+1, I really hope he wins, he was so incredible in the Dark Knight that it can't go unrewarded. |

Movies are crap.
And there's no IMO on the end of that sentence, so it's a fact. |

How are we supposed to have faith in anything you say when you won't even respond to well-thought-out-questions in your own official thread?
Huh? |

Oh, there are a couple of other movies that need some HU attention:
Choke
Chop Shop
City of Ember might get some technical noms, but it is pretty much a kid's flick. |

Doubt was rubbish imo. I broke it off half way through.
I WALL-EEEEE
Revolutionary Road was rubbish. I dislike diCaprio (although he looked like strasse in that movie)
Best screenplay: H-g-l??? I think it was a bit meaningless.
I like all the choices for best original song.
I hope it's gonna be Slumdog ftw in all categories! |

Wall-E is cute. Not what I would agree with Time Magazine as being the best film of the year, but a nice romance.
Revolutionary Road, what it has going for it is the Mad Men tie in. That is why I went for costumes, because the detail is much the same. Yes, it is an agonizing piece of film no matter how noble.
The reason I go with HGL is because it IS indeed a bit meaningless. Somehow, it holds together although it is basically about nothing........well, it IS about teaching: the driver instructor, her job, the flamenco instructor...... But it is what made it different from the other films, it was a film about nothing that still managed to hold one's interest. |
