He is definately close to the top tourny players...
derfinately!
Results speak for themselves.
Just because he is an idiot at the table does not subtract from his play.
And so what if the fields he won his first bracelets in were much smaller than now, we all know that since the fields are bigger , that variance plays a bigger part in the game and skill becomes a smaller factor.
I would challenge anyone to show me a player who has better results. |

People say that he's one of the best tournament players of all time constantly. This is false IMO. They base it off bracelets mostly which honestly doesn't mean all that much. It's not like I've only seen a couple hands he's played, he constantly misplays hands and the way he talks about the game in and about certain hands is pretty bad. People who have played with him a lot will tell you the same thing.
I'd like to see his true results based on ROI etc. not just how many bracelets he has. He plays pretty much every single WSOP event. |

IMO i think bracelets counts for alot, well not the actual bracelet, but the fact that he won the tournament. And even in the tournament he hasnt won he is usually making a good run.
Of course we see the hands he misplays, thats all media, we see EVERY hand he misplays and none of the hands he plays ok. When we first see the coverage of phil he misplays a hand and spews off some of his stack. But have you ever wondered how he got that stack in the first place?
People might say "well he got them from donkeys", but if it were that easy why doesnt everyone do it?
Without sounding like a "pokerbrat lover". I think we should just retire on phil being a really good player. |

| Honestly they love showing a lot of Phil on TV and definitely show more of his winning hands than losing hands IMO. Plus, it's mostly the mistakes he makes on the small stack which are his biggest fundamental errors. |

Why can't Phil and Tom Dwan play 10 000 hands together to find out who's the best? Similar to the challenge with Patrik Antonius
I'm pretty sure Dwan would beat him up |
*sigh*
because you know cash games define how skilled someone is

I can't even tell if this is sarcasm. Cash games involve more skill than SnGs and tournaments. |

Yes Phil makes a lot of mistakes, but in the long run I can't think of anyone better - his tournament winnings gulf anyone else's. Only person I can think of who may become better in the long run is JC Tran, but hes a better tourney player than say Negreanu, Hansen or Ivey.
He may have an attitude problem, play old School and not get the new style of play, but hes definitly up there in the high bracket of being one of the best of all time tourney wise - even his peers who needle him so much recognise this. |

| 9 of 11 of his bracelets came in the pre-moneymaker era, where the player pool was significantly smaller, where most events had less than 300 people. Post-moneymaker his success has been significantly less prolific. |

So... since the WSOP tournies have become pretty much a crapshoot he's only won two? I can't decide if this is an argument for him being one of the best tourney players of all time or not... Jerry Yang won the main event against a huge field... how great is he? Hellmuth's nine bracelets came when the players knew how to play. He's won at least 3 PAD's, as well as the HU championship, all against the biggest names in the game (though arguably all with crappy structures). And considering just how much it's widely known how much he sucks at cash games, the fact that he was a proffesional poker player who specialized in tournaments before the cash crop of tv and UB came along, I'd say he probably won a tourney or two that we don't know about...
Nobody has said that he is THE best, but to say he isn't ONE OF THE best, or to make a comment like,

| LOL at people saying Phil is one of the best tournament players ever. |
is just asinine... |

Love to know how many bracelets the ones slagging off phil for his poor poker have won.. none would be my guess, but its good they can berate his play still.
No doubt his attitude can blow, but who knows how much of that is table image or bad manners. Not like he is only player to rile players, just one of the most famous I guess. |

| I think he has an advantage with things like the WSOP being a known pro, everyone would want to be in a hand with him just so they have a story to tell, if he plays his tight nitty style to this it's just ez game. |

At one time I may have argued that that's just what the tv producers want us to see, but I think there's enough evidence out now from what I've heard others say in interviews and that chat transcript that I posted above to agree, for the most part, he is... |
