Old school nascar fan here but still a fan. Owned a race car for years that we ran at Hickory Speedway. (real race fans know where that is)
I will let everyone in on a little secret on how to make a small fortune in Racing.

Start with a BIG fortune.

After a couple or 7 beers and some boiled peanuts or other healthy food and drink i usualy end up asleep arond the middle. I then awake for the last 25 laps which is all that matters anyway. The same thing happens with football [not soccer]. I picked up this habit in school. But i really think that these guys that are willing to drive nearly 200 mph. for 4 hrs. just to entertain me on a otherwise boring Sat. or Sun afternoon deserve some credit as athletes.

As a driver myself i know what it's like to have to run 7-800 miles a day 7 days a week and how draining this can be. No they don't race 7 days a week but they are testing, qualifying and testing some more 5-7 days a week. And thats all i have to say about that.

Ok, folks, watch me get slaughtered here.

first off, my beef would never be with the drivers.
And KY, if ur pullin' that semi 700-800 miles a day, please try to be careful out there, ok?

my beef is with NASCAR.
and their love affair with the internal combustion engine.
and gasoline.
Go ahead... call me a tree-hugging hippie dope fiend from Cali.
I can take it.
But fokkin' jeezus... what could be more American than Biodiesel?
This country is so awash in corn, they take it and stuff it into bags,
and have contests where they try to toss these bags into holes.
[I still say they confiscated the darts fron Honkythunder's favorite watering hole in MN. Something to do with responsible adults or sharp objects or some other nonsense.now.. where was I? oh yeah]

Indy now runs on ethanol. Why can't NASCAR?[or wesson oil?]
I've seen these guyz do tech talks during the races about how the brakes
on these things get HELLA HOT. So do the disc brakes on my mtn. bike, ldo. But have they considered ANY FORM of regenerative braking, instead of creating hot air with their brakes? NO.

This is the 1 concept I agree with Juggs on. The government isn't gonna make all this crap go away. WE HAVE TO. And what better way 2 start
than research into making cars go 200+ mph, but more efficiently?
[btw, 110 avgas, what they use in these puppies, runs 12.00$+ a gallon.
but hey, those islamic fudamentalists need all the ducats they can get their camel-humping hands on, amirite?]

NASCAR racing teams could be on the forefront of all this. Hell, they've all
got their own state-of-the-art cnc machine shops and design teams.

[Notice how I ain't mentioned F1. Wired magazine did an article on Ferrari, and some scandal about Lotus ripping off one of their ideas.
Basically, they all act like a bunch of ghey rich people imho. So I left em
outta this discussion. Besides, they're still upset about that guy with one nut named Lance who won like 5 or 6 Tour De France's...]

NASCAR = boring.

Round and round and round and round..... Occasional interruptions because of accidents, officials need a pee break, rain; is as bad as American football and controlled by the same factor... money. let's not even mention the recent tire debacle.

Two motorsports worth watching.
Drags. First one to the line wins; endtrans.
Rally. Paris - Dakar. Now there's a race.

i'm not a huge nascar fan, but with the advent of in-car cameras and hd tv i find myself watching more races than ever before.
as for spikes little rant, i must say we here in mn. got the ethanol scam shoved down our throats and now unwitingly must subsidize monster agri corporations to grow more corn. it takes four gallons of fresh water to produce one gallon of ethanol. a natural recource, i'm sure you are aware, should not be so frivolously used.
more fossil fuels are burned to light up las vegas in one day than i will burn in my lifetime. i say lets plan for the future and burn foreign oil now and save ours for later.

1st, i can actually appreciate the round in circles part.
when i was a kid [1960's], my sister n brother-in-law would drag me 2 the 1/4 mile dirt track in Vallejo, CA to watch the hardtops.
they run super-modifieds there now, them thingies w/ wingies, like World of
Outlaws. Fun 2 watch, but u get dirt in ur beer a lot . Sad

And actually, they're talking about using sawgrass for ethanol.

Spike i gave up my truck when fuel hit 5.25 PG in Cali. at 5.8-6.1 MPG it just was'nt profitable anymore. so i've been layin around since july. I agree with beck ... corns for liquor and pork and should be used accordingly. Switch grass [grass in most ditches] and saw grass produce more ethonal than corn. Being here and playing poker 10 hrs. a day has kept me from burning fossil fuels as much as did. I hav'nt used a tank of fuel in the last month. keeping this in mind online poker should be legal in every country, middlesex and farm.

SAVE GAS ... PLAY MORE POKER
