this is a 6 player max $2.25 buy-in

we are 3 handed and on the bubble

BUTTON - 3,942
HERO (SMALL BLIND) 2,150
VILLAIN (BIG BLIND) 2900

Blinds are 25/50

HERO - 8c 8h
Hero raises to 150
Villain calls to 150
The Button folds

POT 300

THE FLOP Qs 8s 9d
Hero checks
Villain bets 150
Hero raises to 400 (the pot is now 550)
Villain re-raises to 1000

Hero ??

the villain was playing pretty tight on the bubble.

i sensed he was sitting on his chip lead over me.... waiting for to me tangle with the maniac chip leader on the button to double up or go out.

I shove here.

While he certainly could have 99, QQ or TJ, I think it's much more likely he has two pair, TPTK, or a piece and a draw, and I personally wouldn't be comfortable giving him another card to beat me with. It is also a $2 SNG, so he could well be playing an utter garbage hand like Q5(s), (lolz), so I think getting it in with bottom set is a massively +EV play. Given the low level of the game, I also think the risk of him folding a hand like Q5 is pretty low (even given that you check-raised him), so I think your best opportunity to get all the money in the middle at a big advantage is right here.

RESULT OF THE HAND:

it was a pretty sick board to flop a set on.. but i did infact shove here even though i kind of felt like i was beat.

my opponent unfortunately did turn over j/10 for the straight, knocking me out of the tournament empty handed.

i'm glad to see that all of you would have done the same. i was afraid shoving on his 3-bet was a clear mistake on my part given the board.

ive been getting bubbled a lot lately under these kind of circumstances. its hard not to feel a little frustrated.

Unlucky result. But I think it is going to be the right play over the long run.
