I don't think you'll get a different opinion; this really is the standard measurement for MTTs.

The standard BR for MTT as your main game is 100x the buy in. 50x the buy in is better for one table SNGs maybe up to 2 - 3 tables. For 45man and up 100x is what to shoot for.

I'd go with 100x (or more) myself, but I think you can push it with 50x.

if you're playing for a living you definitely want 100 buyins or more. for someone trying to build a roll 50 buyins is fine, but even a big winner should expect to have to move down sometimes.

If you have a smaller bankroll, then have a smash at the 9 seat $4 SnG's with a tenner for placing 2nd and a $26 tourney token for the winner. I tried that, helps give a taste of the higher stakes without risking too much cash. First $26 one I played I donked out pretty early, the second time I won a 9 seat event for... a $75 token! lol. needless to say, I won nowt in that one! Sad plenty of time though.

100x is what I play with, it's frustrating when you spend 4 hours to win $11 with the $1, but the way I look at it is I got to play that much longer for just a buck, plus it adds up and gradually you can play bigger tournys.

I use a different formula:
for cash games no more than 5% of the bankroll, for sit and goes and mtt not more than 2-3% of the bankroll.
so I would play 26$ tourneys with a roll of ~870-1300

I thought this was already conservative, but the 100 buy in approach seems even safer.

As HuJwang says, it's dependant on how seriously you're playing. Over a long period of time, with a fixed bankroll you really need to be playing at a level at which you're rolled for 100+ as the variance is mental.

I've been seen playing $535 mtts when I have less than $800 in my account though, so my advice should be taken with a pinch of salt... although seriously, occasional shots at higher levels are fine as long as they don't affect your long-term ability to continue at your "natural" level.
