|
|
Here's a nasty situation that I hate to find myself in when I play Stud 8.
Lets say on fifth street you have (Ks Kd) Jh Jc 9h.
Your opponent is showing 2s 4c 5d You check and your opponent bets. At this point your opponent's most likely hand is a made low, possibly with a freeroll for high.
(Lets not worry ourselves with how we got into this nasty situation by the way.)
Now, as the owner of the ugly-looking high hand, we would clearly call all the way, hoping to get half the pot back, if we were being offered pot odds of 1000 to 1. If we were being offered pot odds of 2 to 1, as in pot limit Stud/8, we'd clearly fold without much hesitation.
My question is - at what point does the pot get so big that you should call all the way with a one way hand, hoping not to get scooped? 10-1? 20-1? 100-1? Lets pretend we know nothing about the upcards and that our opponent has at least an inside straight draw to go with his low. I'm sure the exact number would vary depending on lots of different factors, but I'd like to get a general idea.
I found myself in this unpleasant situation twice after getting heads-up with a low draw last night. Both times I was getting about 10-1 from the pot, but I wasn't quite sure what to do. |

| i dont know the odds but...id flat call all the way unless he caught another st8 card. but i dont know how he played his 4th and 5th street on this hand or all night for that matter. are your k, j still live? id call for 10 to 1 without knowing the math if he checked his 4 and prob throw a raise in if he bet his 5 if he wasnt known for slowplaying. |

I hate that. I folded aces and kings today to an x-x-2-3-4-5-x board and a bet by him on the end.
An even worse spot.
You: (8-7) 6-5-4-8
Opponent 1: (x-x) 2-3-10-9
Opponent 2: (x-x) K-J-Q-7
I knew I had the best hand both ways and was leading from 4th street on. But opponent 1 caught a 7 and completed his low on the end. And player 2 caught a 10 and made an ace high straight. I got scooped like a mofo. |

I play at Absolute, and there isn't really a lot of action here either. I'm playing on money I won in a freeroll last year. Up to $450 from $8. When I eventually deposite, I'll move to Stars for the stud 8 action. They have multi table SNGs.

If you're giving him amade low and an inside straight draw or an outside straight draw he's got a 7 or 8 in hand. so you know 9 of 52 cards. 4 straights, 4 extenders (for A7 down, an 8 or 6), 15 pairing cards. 9.75-1 to make a straight. same for open end draw, 2-1 to make pair+draw.
6th, assuming you catch high but don't fill: 11 cards exposed. out of 20 misses, he still has 4 straights, 9.25-1 this goes on for a while
simpler? if it's 9-1 for his gutshot, he'll miss it 90% each time, so make it ~19% in 2 tries. Another 2% for the backdoor (6-7 if he has an 8).
half the time he has an A and 13-1 he hits it then has 14 outs for a better 2 pair ~2.4%, 15 pair cards, then 13-1 for trips is the same ~2.4%
if he also has a live 3 flush it's like 4%
looks like ~30% he'll outdraw you. less your odds of filling. Call it 25% you'll be drawn out. If it's an inside straight.
It'll cost you 3 bigs to call down for half the pot you'll get ~75% of the time. say 8 bigs before his 5th st bet. At $1/2 for example, a $16 pot before he bets on 5th st. Upcards and aggression have a tremendoes impact here. If he's betting with A5 or AA down, for example, he can brick off and you'll get the whole pot. Decisions, decisions |
