| Lets say you have Ace/King and the flops turns out to be 3,5,8. It really depends on how many people you're going against on whether you continue to play the hand or fold. You have to play the odds and make educated choices. If it's 3 or more players you going against most likely I would fold unless im high in chips and can afford to see the turn. |
I wouldn;t fold unless I was sure they had a pocket pair. If I put in a significant raise with AK preflop and I never got re-raised...and that flop came...then chances are everyone missed the flop and I am going against other drawing hands or small pocket pairs. I bet. If no one raises me I bet the turn again...if I get called again....and i get nothing on 5th street I check.
Most of the time a middle pocket pair will check back.
A high pocket pair if he was so stupid as not to re-raise me up to this point...will certainly bet here.
And a draw hand will either bluff by going all in or put in a mediocre size bet....in which case I call every time.
And if it happens that someone was slow playing aces on me...oh well I lost. Big deal. 9 out of 10 times though the donk will have an A 10 or K J.
Actually that just happened as we speak.
Except I had A 8 he had AK. Missed flop for both. We both checked. Turn brought an ace. Put in half a pot raise. He called. I checked the river....he didn;t re-raise. Showed me his AK and I lost 400 chips.
If it was me with AK in his place...I would have gotten paid on the flop too. Not to mentiion preflop where he just limped in.
Also sometimes betting the turn.....if a jack or a 10 comes for example...will make the guy holding middle pocket pair fold his 9s or 10s. I have done it plenty of times.
The only thing I would have to worry about in this situation is if u put in a significant raise...and u got flat called...u could have a tricky player that just had trips letting u bet into his hand. Most of these guys will try to go all in on you if the flop or turn brings flush and straight scare cards. So it will be easy for u to get out of the hand.
But if u know u have a tricky player at your table and he calls u down to the river....then all of a sudden goes all in....and u don;t take him to be much of a bluffer...it means he played u good and its time to fold.
With the exception of tricky trip players I am not afraid to bet out AK on a missed flop against LAG or TAG players. |

I have found that when I'm the pre flop raiser with a premium hand like AK, AQ and maybe KQ, AJ and make a continuation bet OOP when i have missed the flop with no real cards to represent, and get a caller i always face a big decision on the turn if i miss that as well:
check to opponent, but this just seems to ooze weakness, and if they bet its so hard to call/raise.
fire another big bet on the turn, but then if this goes wrong and opponent raises, then i'm way too pot committed to fold.
I'm assuming anyone who reads this will have been in this situation may times before, so what do you normally do? |
Depends ... |

I have this same problem.... in fact, this problem is my primary weakness...... for what its worth, my new strategy is the mindset, is that you're never too committed to the pot regardless of what you have it to get out....... so you check or fold post flop ?..... it is what it is.... or at least that is what I keep telling myself.
I think showing your weak even after betting heavy pre-flop is a necessity to protect your chips sometimes.
I'm still learning...... but, I'll figure it out... or go broke trying.... |
