So I have noticed a recent trend at almost every table I have been at recently that no one calls my raise preflop if I have great hole cards (AA, KK...etc). I don't alter my starting bets. If I have a hand worth playing I raise, every time. Of course I am conscious of my position at the table while doing this, but it always seems that when I do get those hands everyone at the table mucks. I'm not one who really believes in downswings but it has been rough going the last couple of weeks at the tables, and I believe this to be due in part to the fact that people aren't calling me when I do have these premium hands. Any recommendations on how you all play these hands?

If it matters, I'm usually playing on a 6-handed .25/.50 table.

Depends on several things, maybe your opening range is rather narrow, I don't really play six max so I don't know what a good opening range is from and from which position. I do know that in full ring people tend to give UTG and UTG+1 raises a lot more respect than someone opening from middle position or a stealing position. It might also be your perception of not getting action for your big hands, when I first started playing poker on the freerolls, often I found I got no action for AA or KK and I wondered, how the hell do they know what I have? Now I know, they probably had no idea, but it didn't matter because they didn't have anything either.

getting action on your big hands is not about playing them differently. it's about playing your weak hands differently. if you only raise with premium cards, people will very quickly label you a nit and fold.

if you feel like your opponents have you labeled as a nit, open up your game and start stealing with a lot of mediocre hands in late position. this will be very profitable until people realize what you're doing. keep doing that until your raises aren't getting respect, and then switch gears and wait for a good hand again. this time you should get more action (unless of course you run so dry that you look like a nit again, in which case go back to stealing)

keep in mind even when you have a laggy image there will still be lots of times you raise AA and just pick up the blinds. it doesn't mean your opponents think you're strong, it just means they had garbage themselves and it wasn't really worth it to them to play back at you.

If you play a lot, save your hand histories for a few weeks. Then get the Holdem Manager or Poker Tracker trial version and see what your range is. These tools will tell you what your VPIP and PRF percentages are. These stats will allow you to see how other players preceive your play. If these stats are below 13 they probably have you tagged as a NIT.

Also with these tools and the HUD you can see the 3 Bet percentages of your opponents. Sometimes you can limp your monster hands to a player that 3 bets often going for a limp reraise. Do not do this if you cannot toss these big hands when you are called by 3 or 4 other limpers.

You're probably a super nit and everyone just gives you respect for a hand when you raise (at 50NL players actually have the capacity to understand table image). If you're LAG, you'll be wondering why does no one fold and how come players keep re-raising you.
