Improve your O8 tournament play,by Aarosakura ^__^

Here are a few tips to help you out if you want to go ahead and play some Omaha 8 tournaments.

1.Do we have Mikahs,LBS or Aaros here? [donk, decentish, solid]

This is the most useful tip i believe i will give you.During the first hour, you will play very few hands, around 2%. During this time you should open as many tables of the tournament as possible, and when you can, read back through the hand histories, checking the showdowns and if people are playing "*scooping*" hands if people are playing only high hands, mark them down as such. These people will give you chips later on in the tournament.

[Scooping hands: Hands that will easily take down both high and low sides of the pot, AA23 for example,A23K A234 double suited]

2.Take it slow.

There is no need whatsoever to try to win this tournament in the first hour. This is a game where you need to stay calm, and make sure that you select your hands very carefully. Being picky with hands in O8 is crucial when you have a decent sized stack If you don't,you'll get quartered and scooped reguarly.

[Quartered: splitting half of one side of the pot (usually the low) and losing the other half, this results in you only recieving one quarter of the pot]

[Scooped: Losing the whole pot]

3.Keep pots small

In O8 seeing cheap flops with all of your big hands and decent hands is crucial to making sure you chip up well. If you have AA23 double suited and the flop comes JJ9,you're not happy with where you stand, this is why it is crucial to play small pots and build on the flop. When you have a decent sized stack (25BB+) i do not reccomend 3 betting, even with AA23.

People's agression on the flop and their willingness to chase low/straight/flush draws when you shove over them should lead
to being ahead by far,or freerolling for the whole pot.

[Freerolling: You have one half of the pot guarenteed, and you have a chance of drawing to the high also]

4. BLUFFING PRE FLOP!? ARE YOU MAD!?

Yes,unlike NLHE,for most people in this game,3 betting pre flop won't get you anywhere, and certainly won't work as a bluff.
Representing in this game means almost nothing pre flop,so save your money, maybe see a cheap flop and go from there.

5. Getting short?

Of course, when you get under around 10BB you should really be opening up your hand ranges and finding yourself all in with
A4xx A3xx, This is where your uber extra awesome notes will come in handy. You will want to find yourself in against a raise
against the people who won't be playing "scooping hands" if you have one of these one your table (which you should) then try
to exploit his big blind if you can,you may get a loose call with 3 big cards.

6. Near the money!?

This is an interesting point, since most of the inexperienced players will be out,and we've been playing so tight we should be
able to pick off some uncontested pots with some marginal hands, usually at this point everyone will be tight enough to be
taking down their blinds with a min raise. C-Betting high flops only is also a good idea against experienced players,as they
usually will be playing a series of low cards. Hopefully this will you enough chips to get into the money and have a decent shot.

7. Final table!!!!

Wheee, you've finally done it,well done.about 150 hands to go and you'll be home free. yep 150 hands, that's how long it took me
so don't worry about getting your money in quickly,we're here for the long haul. You should be able to play this like the bubble
since it should be mostly good players, and maybe some who are folding into more money. Slowly turn up your agression and widen
your hand range, see some flops and definately don't 3 bet unless you are severly short [10BB] (and have AT LEAST two to a wheel and two to broadway)

With a little luck you should do well,i hope this was at least decent as a post and i hope you enjoyed reading. Thanks!

Let's leave it here so some more people see it for a few days, though eventually I'd agree to move it. Smile

Good tips, I've never dabbled with omaha hi/lo much but I'd def. like to in the near future. This will be a huge advantage for me when learning the game.

I just came back and read this thread again, and wanted to say thanks one more time! I'm playing a one table $20 NLO8 sit'n'go (10 max) tomorrow night with a table of mostly folks who don't know the game very well or just dont play it very often. The host is really the only other player with a lot of O8 experience that I'm aware of so it should be fun Smile.
